Esai Morales deserved an Oscar nomination

He was remarkable as Bob, the jilted, boozing, insecure big brother. His character was the one that I felt was the most believable, the most gripping. You can totally understand where he's coming from. Not feeling as loved, having his own dreams (being an artist) deemed less important than Richie's music...Morales played it emotional without being melodramatic. Criminal that he didn't get a nomination.

I agree.
He was totally believable.
I really enjoyed every scene he was in.
He was funny too!

I agree with this as well. Esai left a remarkable impression on me when I watched the movie. No one in that movie matched his performance. What ashamed he didn't get an Oscar.

reply

I agree 100% with all of you. He did an excellent job.

"Don't "yeah,yeah" me, Lois."

reply

yeah even the ending, ends it with him yelling Ritcheeeeeeeee!!!!, and his reacttion you almost get more sad at his reaction then the news

Yes indeed, Mr. Morales was flat-out robbed. His performance was absolutely amazing. To this day it stands as one of my all-time favorites. LDP was great too, but in my opinion Esai carried the film to a large extent.

reply

His performance was really good, but to say he carried the film is going way too far. Throughout the majority of the film, he was an extremely negative force on the family. Ritchie's positivity, ambition, and genuine kindness and caring about his family and others stands in contrast to the Morales character. The film is about the short-lived, yet brilliant career of Ritchie Valens, not about his *beep* up, ex-con brother. I found the Bob-O character all too familiar and predictable. His type generally ends up in penitentiaries or dead before age 30.

Esai Morales was a great actor in the 1980s. I always wondered why his career didn't go farther. I wonder if he became typecast?

i dont know who else was nominated that year but i agree his performance was the stand out one in the movie. im curious now who the nominees were. im gonna go check it out

reply

Morales did a great job, but there was some stout supporting actor competition that year:

WINNER:
The Untouchables: Sean Connery
NOMINEES
Broadcast News: Albert Brooks
Street Smart: Morgan Freeman
Moonstruck: Vincent Gardenia
Cry Freedom: Denzel Washington

I agree, Morales freaking owned this film! He did such a great job with a pretty complex character and I think his character easily had the most depth...and I can't tell if it was the writing, his acting or a combination of both. So, pretty impressive to say the least.

"Rock 'n roll martian!"

I jizzed my pants when he asked Rosie to put a little mota in their love life.

I would have liked to been a grip in the movie and be able to go up to him after the scene outside the house, (after the director hollered "CUT!!!"), where he threw a rock through the window and say to him, "You draw very well Bob. Better than Ritchie can I bet."

Esai Morales was also excellent in the 1983 movie "Bad Boys" with Sean Penn.
