I WITNESSED THE PLANE CRASH

I witnessed the plane crash which caused Richie Valens to become fearful of flying. In 1957, a DC-7 on a test flight, collided with an F-89 fighter plane over the San Fernando Valley. The Valley schools were at recess on their respective playgrounds when it happened.

I was in grammar school, and we were playing kickball, when we heard the crash, looked-up and saw the two planes immediately after their collision. The smaller jet went one way, and the DC-7 the other, and it started breaking-up in the sky. I'll never forget the sound of the crash. The DC-7 dove and crashed into the playground of Pacoima Jr. High a few miles from my school; the Jr. High being the one Richie attended. Several people on the ground were killed, and over 70 were injured. Valens escaped potential injury or death because he was at his grandfather's funeral and missed school that day. News organizations came to my school and interviewed me and some of my friends who heard the crash and saw its aftermath. This incident left an indelible mark on my memory which remains.

Wow! That was so sad, when he told the story. It's amazing you witnessed that. At first, though, I thought you were talking about Ritchie's plane crash. Still, some memories live with us forever, good and bad.

I think about this crash every once in a while. The same scenes come back to my memory of watching the passenger plane crack-up and fall, and the jet veering off after the crash. One of my classmates named David saw it first, and yelled, "look at the sky-writer," which was the passenger plan breaking-up. I remember that I replied that sky-writers don't have pieces falling off when they're flying. Pieces were flying-off the plane and sparkling in the noon day sun. A sight that would have been beautiful, if not so horrific.

Another crash, which I did not witness, but visited right after the crash, was a Flying Tiger Line plane that crashed a few miles from where the passenger plane above crashed. It crashed in 1962, and I rode by bike out to see it, because it crashed right across the street from where my uncle lived. The plane was short of the then Burbank Airport (then Lockheed-Burbank, then Hollywood-Burbank, then, I believe, the Bob Hope Airport). The plane clipped a telephone pole and landed in a lot, stopping at a brick wall, if memory serves. The Burbank Airport was a busy airport adjacent to the large Lockheed plant. It was great living near there, because I could watch the many types of planes flying to and from there, including my favorite, the Lockheed P-38, with it's distinctive two fuselages, and double tails. Later, I could watch the very unusual jets with engines attached to the sides of the planes near the tail, when these planes fist flew.

Errrr Yeaaaa. And Im your Irish Uncle. Did you also see the gunman on the grassy knoll?

Wow. Thanks for sharing. You know, all these years I never really understood the dream sequence. Never knew if Ritchie really witnessed something like that or just had a trepidation about it. Thanks for clearing it up and sharing your experience. What a horrifying tragedy. Glad you survived. I could imagine what kind of survivor's guilt you might have struggled with through the years, with so many fellow kids being killed. Anyhow, again, glad you're here today and glad you shared this.
