So was Richie really scared and dreaming of dying in a plane crash?
That would be weird.

According to Ritchie Valens' official web site, he was not afraid to fly.

I'm sorry they made that up for the movie, then, it's a dramatic ploy, sure, but in a way does a diservice to Richie.
"Did you make coffee...? Make it!"--Cheyenne.
Ritche did have a fear of flying go to the trivia page, there was a coin toss that took place. When he was in elementary school a plane crashed into his school ground and killed several people and 75 kids were injured, ritche missed it because he was at his grandfathers funeral. Also on the behind the music of it the guy who loss the coin toss said buddy holly said i hope your bus freezes and he said yeah well i hope your plane crashes
shareJ. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson had contracted flu during the tour and asked Buddy Holly's bass player and future country music legend Waylon Jennings for his seat on the plane. When Holly learned that Jennings was not going to fly, he said in jest, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up." Jennings responded, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes,". And that response haunted him for the rest of his life. In 2002 he passed away from diabetic complications.
Ritchie Valens asked Buddy Holly's guitar player Tommy Allsup for his seat on the plane. The two agreed to toss a coin to decide. Bob Hale, a DJ with KRIB-AM, was working the concert that night and flipped the coin in the ballroom's side stage room shortly before the musicians departed for the airport. Dion DiMucci from Dion and the Belmonts had been approached to join the flight. Dion decided that since the $36 fare (equivalent to US$291.20 in today's money) equaled the monthly rent his parents paid for his childhood apartment, he could not justify the indulgence.
