Why I Think Jaws The Revenge is WAY Better than Jaws 3

I'm problably the minority here but I actually think Jaws The Revenge is VASTLY superior to Jaws 3 and much more entertaining. Here's why:

1. Lorraine Gary-It was AWESOME to see her back on the big screen after an 9 year hiatus since Jaws 2. She carried the entire movie herself and she did a great job. She really made you feel her grief and paranoia through her great acting. She's the BEST.

2. It was a nice return to Amity island, albeit briefly. It had the feel of the first 2 Jaws movies whereas 3 did not.

3. The score by Michael Small was intense. I loved his reworking of the familiar Jaws themes plus his new score fit in perfectly.

4. The scenery in the Bahamas was gorgeous and the cinematography was breathtaking.

5. Michael Caine added a great supporting role.

6. Sean's death and the banana boat attack sequence were suspensful and well done.

7. There were alot of scenes that referenced the original Jaws and provided continuity.

8. Nice cameos by Mrs. Kintner and Mrs. Taft again added to the continuity of the first film although Mrs. Taft appeared in Jaws 2 as well.

9. I liked the heartbeat from the electronic device that was injected into the shark so you could hear him approaching...much like the barrel scenes in the original Jaws.

10.The shark looked more real than the shark in Jaws 2 and 3D. But not as good as the original Bruce.

I just wish that Universal would have kept the original US version intact and released that on DVD. The impaling sequence is poorly edited but it makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the version where the shark explodes for no reason. The original version was also a much more bloody and gorier finale and Jake's character should have died. There is no way her could have survived that attack. Hopefully when Univeral releases Jaws The Revenge on HD DVD they will release the superior original US version.

Overall I think Jaws 3 sticks out like a sore thumb. It looks cheap, the acting is routine, the effects are below average, the music was poorly done and the most tragic mistake of this movie is that it was completely and utterly BORING!!!!! Its clear why Joe Alves never directed another movie again after this.

So I really dig Jaws 4. Sure it has its faults but its charms outweigh the negativity this movie has gotten over the last 20 years! Its under rated and clearly does NOT belong on the bottom 250 movies on IMDB.

Bring on Jaws 5 with Lorraine...we've been waiting a long time for this!

Jaws: The Revenge is much better than Jaws 3. I hate Jaws 3.

I also like the character of Michael. By now the series is a horror series. That's what this film sets to do. I take it with a grain of salt, just like the ol' Friday the 13th films.

the banana boat scene was suspenseful and well done ??

COme on .. that was terrible ... when i saw that in the theater there were a lot of people laughing out loud ... slow motion ... the shark's entire body comes straight out of the water ... looked so fake ...

Sargent's directing was just terrible .... he shot the shark in a way to emphasize how fake it looked ... Spielberg showed in tiny doses and only for a second here and there .. he was able to minimize it's faults and shoot it in a way that made it look pretty good ..

i like Jaws 3 & 4 .. but i like them as comedies ..

reply

they both are pretty bad
but heres my thing

jaws 3 was somethin different,kind of:P
it ws hokey and b-movie material but i liked it,a guilty pleasure

jaws 4...omg the shark...it looked like they spent 20 dollars on it..ha wow
the movie was a good cheesy drama,if u edited the shark out of it it would have been a lifetime channel watcher's wet dream, but whatever

it was pretty evident with jaws 2 that, you couldnt make it as good as the first,no blame in trying...end it there...but nope...they made jaws 3 and well,we saw how good it was...maybe they've learned...nope lets make another sequel where the shark somehow has the same travel agent as the brody's,going from cold water to warm, and knowing when someone important in the film has dipped their leg in the water

watch jaws 3 looking for cheap thrills, watch jaws 4 as a comedy,im outie

I liked Revenge alot more than part 3 as well.

Alot of people say this is the worst looking shark, but I preferred it to the one in 3-D. At least this one looked somewhat intimidating, the one in part 3 looked like it was smiling alot of the time.

People also say the shark tracking them to the Bahamas was ridiculous because "a shark wouldn't do that"...what are you looking for in Jaws part 4? A documentary? It's supposed to be supernatural, that's why Ellen has some kind of telepathic link with the shark as well, a few times it shows her sensing the shark's approach.

"Well...I've seen enough. Come on Charlie, we're going home."

As well as the smiling he seemed unable to move his rear end.

Not sure Overall it was better, but one thing I will say which definately made it better, was the fact that at least in Jaws 4, we saw Jaws up close when attacking or Killing his victims.

In Jaws 3-D, only 1 time did we really see Jaws pop up out of the water to attack someone and that 1 time he did, he did not even kill Seans gf, who happen to be 1 of the water skier ladies. He just grazed her leg. That was the scene on the Bumper boats.

Shelby Overmans Death while trying to fix the gate was gruesome, but even there, everything was shot underneath the water. Never did Jaws come out of the water to Kill any of his victims, like it did in Original Jaws, Jaws 2 and Jaws 4 the revenge.

Karen Young who cast as Carla Brody, was so Hot in Jaws 4 she made me completely forget just how bad any parts of this movie were. Loved the scenes where she is angry with Michael and they make Love in the garage, the other scene where she flings or slings her Thong at him, and where she is so nicely dressed up while out with their friends on New Years Evene or whatever the occasion was when they were out at the Casino with Hoagie Michael Caine.

Jaws 4 Nowhere near as bad as it was made out to be.Cretainly not great, or even close to solid, but not that bad that it deserved to be 1 of the worst movies ever. Not even close.

It is possible to consider the extremely far fetched shark scenes in Jaws the Revenge as a dream of proably Ellen Brody's

Yes, there has to be some way to explain how awful it is. Jaws 3 sucked donkey balls, but to a lesser extent than this farcical nonsense.

It's as bad as the original movie was good, I know, I didn't think that was possible either.

Well I think Jaws the Revenge is WAY better than Jaws. Yes the original...
And here's why:

1. Uh...
2. Er....
3. Ummm....
4. Hmmm...

Okay, that pretty much sums it all.

I agree with you! I had a really borring day today, because I was sick from school, so I just saw half of JAWS 2, whole JAWS 3 and JAWS: The Revenge, beacause they came all after eachother on TV. I have seen JAWS and JAWS 2 many times, and, ofcourse, JAWS is a classic, and a masterpiece. JAWS 2, is an okay sequel, for a masterpiece, like JAWS. Cool to see Rob Sheider in it.

But... Then I saw JAWS 3... I thought is was really stupid!... The effects were sooo bad made, and the wholem movie looked, like you said, sooo cheep!
And Dennis Quaid... Just didn't like how he played... Didn't like it at all.

Then I saw JAWS: THE REVENGE. First I thought: "Yeah right, a SHARK takes revenge? *beep* stupid."

But... With the theme from John Williams, and the other score (who was that from?), made it very psycologicly, and intense. The acting was okay, and it was funny to see Michael Cain, and Lorraine Gary reprising her role.
And the clip from JAWS, with Martin Brody.

Much better, then BORRING, STUPID, UN-WELL-ACTED-DENNIS QUAID - JAWS 3.

I really liked the end, just when they stab the shark with the boat, where you see the clip, were Mertin Brody shoots the shark, in JAWS.

On the B-MOVIE scale: **** out of *****

Thank you so much for setting things straight. I agree with all of this. It really puzzles me to this day why a lot of people seem to want to think Jaws 3 was better. Jaws IV is just plainly much, much better than Jaws 3. Jaws 3 is just terrible. I still find it entertaining, but I know Jaws 3 is just full of bad. People these days just act so ignorant towards Jaws 4 and think that just because it has a stupid plot point about a shark seeking out a family, it is the worst movie of all time. Jaws 4 really is an ok movie. And it's extremely entertaining. Jaws 4 haters know it's true but just don't want to admit it. It really has a great cast and the acting is so much better than Jaws 3's acting. Don't forget Lance Guest, he makes the best Mike Brody and he really did an outstanding job in his role. Like you said, Jaws 4 may have its faults but it will always be better than the very bad piece of cinema that was Jaws 3.

Yea right man, you know Jaws 3 was terrible. Why do you hate Jaws 4 so much? It's an entertaining film still if theres one thing you may agree on. Jaws 3 was cheesy, had a bad script, and the special effects were terrible. The acting in Jaws 3 wasn't very good either. Calling Jaws 3 a masterpiece over Jaws 4 is just ridiculous, but if you really feel that way then whatever.

Ok, don't be an ass. It's my opinion, just because Jaws 4's has a bad plot point doesn't mean it's a terrible movie. There are good points in movies. You haven't told me why you hate Jaws 4 yet.

You actually haven't told me any reasons but whatever. I don't really care anymore. Jaws 3 may be a bad movie but I still find it quite enjoyable and fun to watch.

Jaws 3D is kinda silly, it is at least interesting for other reasons too. Its interesting to watch the antics at Seaworld and it has a fun/scary summer feel to it.

Jaws: The Revenge is, for the most part, pretty tame for a Jaws movie. Its like a Hallmark version of Jaws. Dont get me wrong, the Banana boat sequence and the younger Brody's death scene are pretty good, but these are too few for a Jaws film...Infact the theatrical trailer features all the best 'shark' scenes from the movie, and it actually had a more heightened sense of horror than the full length movie IMHO.

Dont get me wrong, I dont hate it, but I couldnt watch it regularly (I watch Jaws 1,2,3D about once every two years or so).

I did think it was better than Jaws 3-D (though not by alot). I saw it for the first time on Saturday night, July 18, 1987 on its opening weekend at mt local Rock Hill, SC theater (one of 16 I saw there during the summer of 1987). And I did like it allright, enough in fact that later that month when I went to this theater with my mother and sister one weekday afternoon I decided to see it again while they saw Dragnet a second time. And I rented it out and watched it twice on our VCR in summer, 1988. And the points you make here are valid (except for #10-to me that shark was so obviously a machine). And it did have some emotion and touching scenes in it, as well as a very strong family emphasis. And it did have some suspense and scares in it, and excitement. I have no desire to see it again, and I do not think it comes close to the great original, or the also very good Jaws 2. But yes, it was better than Jaws 3-D, which I did see 25 years ago this month in theaters, and did not like at all.

I think if anything they should have switched them. Jaws 4 should have been Jaws 3, and then it would give Mike Brody a reason to work at Sea World because he still loves the water, but working at Sea World you wouldn't expect a shark to get in. Obviously some of the characters would have to change but I think it would be easier to like. And that way it's not soooo weird if Mrs. Brody isn't in it. I just don't like the fact that in Jaws 4 it's like Jaws 3 never happened.
