Sean's death
I felt really bad that Sean was the one that had to die, especially after all that he went through. I guess Roy Schreider was smart to pass up the cameo apperance.

shareAnd it was such a horrific death too! First his arm is ripped off and then goes the rest of him...it was just too much.
sharei liked this part. it was the only thing i liked in the movie the opening death scene and hoped it was not as bad as people make it out to be but i was very wrong

I don't really count Jaws 3 or 4 as cannon.....not sure that Universal or any of the cast members do either so to me Sean still lives...as does Mr Scheider.
shareThis is one of those movies that verges on R rated, and is more R rated in tone than PG-13.
shareThe film really tanks after this scene, but IMO they couldn't have done this part any better. Excellent build-up, tension, and the death itself is quite horrific and frightening.
You can believe what you want, but don't believe it here. - Harry Crumb
Yeah, the way it was shot was also creepy. The close and quick cuts of the shark chewing him (Mostly footage of baby great whites eating seals or meat, if you watch on slo mo and zoom in lol), the sound FX, the night setting, the cheerful Christmas music with children singing, and the good acting!
If you watch the behind the scenes making, they show a bit of the scene being filmed, and after one take of Mitch screaming, one of the crew members goes "Jesus, scared the hell outta me!". You can tell the director really thought it would be a convincing scene.
I also try to count this one as non-canon, but it still sucks nevertheless.
Sean's death truly is depressing, not just because of what he experienced and survived before and the fact his death was so horrid, but it really sucks for the remaining members of the Brody family. Ellen lost both her husband and her son, Michael lost both his dad and his brother, Thea lost her uncle and we don't even know if she ever met her grandpa.
It would've been just as bad if Roy Scheider reprised his role and Martin died, since he's the hero and successfully killed the first two sharks. Both he and Sean survived those events.

I liked his death scene, it was the one thing this movie got right.
shareAnd if it hadn't have been for those pesky kids (carolling) he might have gotten any help. But he'd already lost an arm by then.
shareI'd love to see the full behind the scenes making of this scene and this movie.
For this scene, the making of video shows a little bit of filming, but it seems as if they didn't have the animatronic shark during the scene, which is odd considering it is shown when it jumps out at Sean. Did they film the shot of the shark jumping out of the water in a different location, or maybe just on a different night perhaps? The making of video shows the stunt men rocking the boat, and little explosions going off in the water, which looks strange, but might be part of the effect to show splashes. No shark or shark rig is shown at all though, so it would be interesting to hear if anyone knows any more details.
If you look very, VERY closely, the very first shot of the shark jumping out to attack Sean is actually a shot of the shark taken from much later in the film. You can tell, because there is already blood in the water. It's from when Mike and Jake are chumming the Bahamanian waters to attract the shark and put a tracking device. They took that shot, darkened the picture quality and color correct it to blend in with the night footage.

I agree! I hated that! Ruined the movie for me to begin with and the rest of it just made it worse. I'm going to ignore 4 and go with the happier ending (at least for the Brody boys) of 3.
