The Noodle Eating Scene - Everyone Give Your Opinion

Do you think the scene in which Robin Williams was eating the noodles at the noodle shop with Thuan was improvised? I mean, Robin Williams seemed pretty d*&^ surprised at the fact that the noodles were especially hot (spicy).

I think Robin didn't know how hot the dish was going to be until he tried it. This was probably a one-take-shot for the movie. What do you think? I thought his reaction was priceless and seemed genuine. And, of course, I thought the scene worked very well.

He's good at imitating that kind of stuff. It may have actually been really spicy, but maybe not.

It was well acted. I was convinced.

It's hard to tell.

Robin Williams can fake stuff like that in his sleep. OTOH, film crews are notorious for their practical jokes.

You are right on. It was not improvised. Robin did not know how spicy that noodle bowl was...although he was the one dumping the entire jar of chili pepper into it! :-)

Of course he was dying afterwards and had to drown himself in water.

The reason I know this is because I was sitting across from him in that scene - feeling victorious for egging him on. "If you trusting me, you'll eat it!" HAHAHAHAH
That was one of the earlier scene that we shot together, and he quickly earned my admiration and respect for making it real.

p.s. I check back on this board every so often and always amaze that fans still talk about it after all these years - for good reason though as it was a great movie. It certainly was for me.

Your reaction to his reaction was authentic too, Tom (Tung), and one of the reasons I felt the food was a surprise to Williams at the time. Congratulationsby the way, for good work overall.

My dad was stationed at Korat Air Base in 1967-68 with the USAF and I remember him telling a story about eating a dish one day early on, and the old Thai men were dipping their chopsticks in a clear liquid hot sauce then shaking them off before taking a bite of the dish. Well, to he11 with all that trouble he thought I'll just pour some of this stuff on the dish instead of dicking around with the dip and shake between each bite, he11, I like hot sauce. He said he should have realized his mistake when they started to grin at each other but didn't say anything to him. The old Thai men had a good laugh at his reaction and his mouth stopped burning at least 3 to 4 weeks before he rotated back stateside a year later. Apparently they got some HOT HOT HOT sauces in Thailand

I'll tell you why I think it may be unscripted:

Right after he takes a mouthful and spits it out, Williams says "mai ao" which is actually the Thai way of saying you "don't want" something. The movie was filmed in Thailand and he probably learned a few phrases while he was here.

If it was scripted, surely he'd say something Vietnamese, or purely English. I think he was shocked and "mai ao" slipped out.

Just my theory, but hey, it makes good sense to me.
