Changing the ending was a mistake

It was already set up so beautifully with the scene of Dan and Alex bonding over Madam Butterfly in the kitchen.

I know this movie ends up on all the shocking horror movie moments lists, and the ending is what frequently gets it put on there, but to me it cheapens it somehow.

The original FEELS more true to life for the characters.

Either way it's a classic, but I wish there was a way to have both full versions.

I don't think the original ending is THAT good, there's a good reason they didn't go with it. It's an interesting alternate ending as a curiosity piece but no way in hell is it better than the theatrical ending, they made the right decision.

I felt the ending they rewrote and went with felt like a betrayal of what the creators intended and it came off as a slasher movie tone. Though it makes sense, as most people at the time saw Alex as a "bitch" who deserved little sympathy and got what was coming to her, and not necessarily as a person who needed help.
