It's because she developed Erotomania, which seems to be easily brought on by Borderline Personality Disorder IMO. It's a delusional disorder where she believes that Dan loves her or at the very least cares for her. She was going to stop at nothing to get him back.

I think nowadays there are stalking laws that would mean action could be taken to keep her away.
Trouble is the types of people who stalk never seem to take notice of the law.
