Why didn't they just script a son instead of a boyish little girl?
Aside from the scene where she puts lipstick all over her face, the child's sex is almost irrelevant to the plot.

shareIn which case why would they need to script a boy if the child's sex was irrelevant?

I can't believe some people's obsession over a little girl with a pixie haircut.
shareMe neither.
"Has anyone seen my wife?" - Columbo
Good Grief! There really are some odd threads around.
shareIndeed. This one particularly makes no sense if the sex of the child was irrelevant!
"Has anyone seen my wife?" - Columbo
of course. there was no sense to have a boy or girl. the girl was a total cutie.
and all the posts about who you feel sorry for alex or dan? it's poor ellen who suffers the most...
The first time I saw this movie, it took me until halfway through before I knew Ellen was a girl. When Dan tells Alex he has a 6 year old daughter I was stunned. I rewound it to double check. Yeah, there was no evidence whatsoever that she was a girl at any time. A very boyish haircut. Strange. A little bit of sloppy directing in my opinion.
shareSo your opinion is that it's "sloppy directing" to choose acting over appearance?
shareIt wouldn't have hurt for them to make her look like a girl. It is as if they didn't put any thought into it at all. You could go that whole movie and not know if you aren't paying attention. How many movies can you watch where you are wondering after half the movie if it is a girl or a boy?
shareYou may be too young to remember how young girls dressed during that era. They didn't wear dresses unless they were going to a wedding or something. My daughters were in elementary and middle school during those years, and never once wore a dress unless it was for some fancy occasion. Same with all the girls they went to school with. The costume designer did a great job and the outfits Ellen was wearing were extremely cool for those days. She looked like an authentic New York girl.
shareWhy did Ellen criticise JonBenet Ramsey?
JonBenet is not around to defend herself, and i doubt she had much say in being made to be a pageant queen.
So your opinion is that it's "sloppy directing" to choose acting over appearance?Just chiming in here – I think it's "sloppy directing" to choose acting at the expense of appearance, yes.
She was referred to quite clearly as a girl in the opening scenes. When Beth was getting ready for the book-signing party, Ellen was playing with her lipstick and got it all over her face. Beth clearly says "How many times have I told you not to play with my make-up? Silly GIRL".
That said I can understand why some Brits got confused because to us, the American accent makes the name Ellen sound like Alan although a lot of young boys can look feminine and girls more masculine depending on how they are presented. Case in point is Angelina Jolie's first born, Shiloh. She likes to dress like a boy and could easily pass for a boy (and a cute one too). Ellen Latzen was also a very cute child no matter what gender people thought her to be.

I fear for humanity when I read posts like this. You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with my posts - a very sad reflection of how much time you devote to the opinions of others when essentially you clearly have a very low opinion of yourself.
I pop onto this board now and again - that much is evident but not daily or even weekly at times. I am not in the least bit maternal (shows how much you know!), and Ellen the actress is now a woman and no doubt rather upset when she reads ignorant comments such as these that you make. By all means target me more if it keeps you from doing the same to others because I am able to brush these sorts of insinuations aside.
Secondly I am not a homophobe so just how you baked that one up is beyond me. I have never met Ellen Latzen but know a few lesbians and gay men and can count them among my best of friends, unlike you who fails on every singular level to make a valid point and express it with a modicum of factual content. Please, have a nice day if you can muster up enough optimism because sadly, I am all out of Valium to sell on Anthrax Island.

You can't go around deeming other posters paedophiles on the basis of a mere misguided opinion.
Are you aware that this sort of written word is now a crime? It may not be where you live but it is illegal in my jurisdiction and you are fortunate that I am nice enough not to bother reporting your comments. Pat yourself on the back but any more of it and I may change my mind and take this accusation further. Be very wary in future before you start to tag complete strangers with such references as that which you have placed upon me.
I am not keen on kids in real life, let alone in movies. They can be an annoying distraction. Ellen the adult strikes me as a nice woman and yet does feel upset, apparently as to be thought of as a boy. Is it your problem or mine? Probably not but I will always try to put a fair comment in here and there as you yourself should too.
That all said and buried, let us discuss the film. Did you enjoy it? If so what element did you like best? Don't waste your words having a go at me - you are articulate and your words are better spent discussing the film. Also, did you ever see "Play Misty For Me"? If so, what did you think? Any comparisons?

Yes I agree. It was a treat to see Clint in this kind of role since I am not really a great fan of Westerns although I adore the scores!
Sorry to hear you have had some dodgy experiences with us mad Sheilas haha! I've known a few myself. There is one in my street - you know the type, the ones who emerge at all times of the day still in their dressing gowns ready to stalk anything with a pulse, not excluding the postman
Glenn Close was indeed great in this role too, I agree. One of her scariest expressions was when she was trailing Dan in his hire car as he listened to the tape she made for him!
Did you ever see her in a lesser known flick named "The World According to Garp"? I can't get that movie affordably anywhere for some reason. Robin Williams also stars. That was another sad loss to my mind. Just now and again the world pauses when an actor takes such drastic action.
Michael Douglas is great in all of his roles. I loved "Disclosure" in particular. What about you?

I wonder.. do any of the younger audience know anything about Vincent Price beyond "Edward Scissorhands"?
Remember how Peter Cushing played Winston Smith in the 1954 BBC production of "Nineteen Eighty Four" but was passed over for the film version in favour of Esmond O'Brien who was seen as more "bankable" and a bigger "name".
Yet today, O'Brien is forgotten and Cushing is still famous, even though he has been dead for over twenty years.

Thanks for the heads-up about the film being available on eBay but last I checked it was a Region 1 and I can only play European Region 2 (I think that is the right way around!).
It's a gem of a story. I saw it once years ago on TV but it never seems to be repeated which has clearly created the demand.
I too haven't seen those titles you list aside from a little of Wall Street but I struggled getting into that. I was probably too young back then to appreciate it. A Perfect Murder was very good. I think I have seen that about 4-5 times now on DVD. Gwyneth Paltrow was rather good in that also. In fact I have only just watched her in "The Talented Mr Ripley" via Netflix, with Matt Damon. The title never appealed to me for some reason but I gave it a go and loved it. I have replayed it four times since being in bed with a cold LOL! I was instantly engrossed in it and it helps to have parts of Italy as the backdrop.
I was very confused watching "The Game" at first but it was late when I first viewed it on a VCR. I have since watched it again and yes agree, the plot is rather odd but the acting is good. I have lost count of how many Douglas flicks I have seen. I think he was definitely at his best in those 80's films. He's started to look a lot like his father now, uncannily so! But with Michael Douglas you kind of know you are going to get a quality performance. Same with Anthony Hopkins I find. Another very adaptable actor!

Dyke haircut? That's homophobic and bigoted.
share...the child's sex is almost irrelevant to the plot.
_____________
The child's sex is "relevant" to the plot, in that the Gallagher's had a daughter not a son. When Alex kidnaps her for part of the day, it seems more believable that Ellen "being a girl", would have connected more easily with this "stranger" female. Ellen is referred to as female in the beginning and I don't recall at any stage, questioning why she should be a boy. There is a scene where she dresses up a a pilgrim boy for a school play; but that was just cute and she got away with it.....so good for her. Plus, she looked like she could have been the real child of Douglas and Archer's characters and would have screen tested better, over the other child contenders.
By the way, do you have an "issue" with little girls that can look boyish and is that your real reason for posting?
"it seems more believable that Ellen "being a girl", would have connected more easily with this "stranger" female"
Actually that's something i hate in real life - that often children are warned against strange men but not strange women - think Myra Hindley or Melissa Huckaby.
...often children are warned against strange men but not strange women...
___________
This is something that came to mind, when I wrote the response. I would say that "us" men, are in the majority of perpetrators, when it comes to child abductions and that is why we are more maligned than women, when it comes to this crime.
I believe it is a societal conditioning and hypocritical double standard, when women are seen as the "real" and "genuine" care givers and nurturers of children, above men and are perceived as holding a "special" corner of the market in this arena. It doesn't appear to get acknowledged as much, that men do the same things as women, when it comes to caring for their children. I suppose it isn't "manly" enough and most males, wouldn't have even played with dollies when they were kids, to learn to do the same things.
i honestly had a hard time guessing if it was a boy or girl, when i first watched
i've got feelings too, ya know - inbetweeners
Most children can pass for both a boy or a girl at this young age.
I repeat an earlier comment I made regarding the Jolie-Pitt children (those born to the couple). Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne all look remarkably alike but Shiloh likes to dress like a boy and have boyish haircuts. Subsequently she could easily be mistaken for a boy if we didn't know differently. It is quite feasible that Shiloh is trans-gendered (something I got attacked for mentioning a few years ago on the Jolie board which was quite a lynch mob because I know a few trans-gendered folks and they all knew at a very early age although she may just be experiencing a perfectly normal tomboy phase).
There is no doubt that Ellen Hamilton Latzen is every inch a pretty woman in adulthood. It's often easy to mistake a boy for a girl or a girl for a boy depending on the clothing they are dressed in and the style of their hair. A boy with long blonde curly hair in dungarees I once mistook for a girl so it's not a crime by any means at that age.
Also unless you are paying attention to every bit of dialogue when first viewing Brits can be forgiven for missing the few female references because of the pronounciation of "Ellen" in American dialogue - it is easily mistaken for "Alan", hence the confusion.
"These days you have to boil someone before you can sleep with them"
They could have put Latzen in a dress or have her wear a long hair wig.
little girl characters in tv and movies connect more with the adult audience if they are prettied up and feminized.
Take Boy Meets World - today most people say they prefer Lily Nicksay's more feminine, cutie pie version of Morgan Matthews to Lindsay Ridgeway's more sassy tomboyish version, even though Nicksay was only in 2 seasons out of 7.
I believe she was chosen for her acting ability. I think everyone felt sorry for the child in FA no matter how they dressed her. Had they cast a little boy we would have pitied the child just as much I think.
"These days you have to boil someone before you can sleep with them"
I thought she was adorable and, rare for a child actor, very believable in her role.

ain't gonna read all that

OP, presumably the script called for a girl but they picked an actress with a haircut that made her look like a boy. If they'd changed the character to a boy it would have been even more weird having a girl playing a boy.
I also thought she was a boy at first, when they first refer to her as a she I thought "They have another child?"
It is odd that a 1980s Hollywood movie would have a little girl that looks so much like a boy who is only an ancillary character and her appearance is never even mentioned. In this year's Room, the long haired boy does look like a girl and even though he's in a traumatic situation where this is the least of his worries, his grandma (Joan Allen) still says he should get his hair cut and eventually he does.
You are weird person. LOL. If child's sex is irrelevant as you say why did they need to script a boy? What a logic. Writer of the final script probably planned that from the get-go. In original story it was a girl/daughter for some reason. May be script has gender-neutral child character and they cast this girl based on her acting abilities. She had better chemistry with Douglas and Archer, so they picked her.
And why is girl boyish? WTF? She's adressed early on as a silly girl. She just had haircut that many kids had in late 80s. And she wore clothes that many kids wore in late 80s. 80s was less gendered society for kids. Girls didn't wear pink dresses and boy didn't wear blue all the time. Heavy gendering for kids became a thing in mid 90s to early 2000s.
