Close should've won the Oscar

Such an intense, focused performance; the scene where she's flicking the light on and off, just totally abandoned...Hollywood just doesn't offer performances like this anymore, maybe one or two scenes of screaming from otherwise cardboard twentysomething actors to get Academy notice. Sad.

When I had Netflix I would often peruse the synposis for several flicks and the moment I read something like "Four teens get trapped in a wood..." I just hurried along for this very reason. So boring a concept and so utterly predictable.

You make a valid point in your post. I don't think anything gripped me so much in many years previous to FA aside from maybe Jaws (which I was way too young to view upon its release). There are few intelligent movies out there these days. I don't object to a concept being remodelled so long as something new is brought to the table. I saw "Play Misty For Me" after I saw "Fatal Attraction" and thought both differed extensively so am always confused when people compare the two. Similar concept but vastly different movies.

I look forward to seeing more input from you on this, my favourite board. It is generally very friendly here so welcome if you are a new contributor!

Glenn was certainly good in the role, but the movie itself had too much of the trappings of an exploitation movie. Her self-cutting, and that scene with the cooked pet rabbit, are proof of this.

She was definitely much better than Cher, but I think Close really deserved to win the next year for "Dangerous Liaisons" (she lost out to Jodie Foster in "The Accused").

But my favorite female performance of 1987 would be Maggie Smith in "The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne." She wasn't even nominated, although I'm not sure if she was eligible that year or '88.

Without you, today's emotions would be the scurf of yesterday's.

Although Cher was great in Moonstruck, she was nowhere near the level of Close's blazing, unforgettable performance in this film! Close also should have won a year later for Dangerous Liaisons!

The other major contender that year was Holly Hunter for Broadcast News. Either actress would have been worthier. How Cher won for Moonstruck is beyond me.

If you asked Cher, she'd likely ask why she didn't already win an Oscar for a previous undeserved role, and why she had to be kept waiting wait 5 yrs.

But, I agree, Holly Hunter probably would have been the runner-up, when you consider her precursor awards. (though I haven't seen BN)

Cher was great in Moonstruck and certainly warranted the nomination, but I don't think she should have won. Close was definitely the better pick and should have won.
