I am just wondering if they cast Sharon Stone to play Alex, would she have pulled off the role as well as Glenn Close?? Glenn Close is an amazing actress but I don't think she's that pretty enough to make Dan cheat on his wife which made this story a little less believable.

I don't claim to have all the answers but it was indeed a gamble taking on Glenn Close for this role (not unlike casting Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys).
Close looked quite pretty in some scenes. Although not a classic beauty, she had sex appeal. The actress declared she had issues in wearing a "teddy" (lingerie), and was very body-conscious. That would be the scene where she had Dan visit her apartment when offering hin scotch, vodka et al.
I think in essence, we are looking at a man (Dan), who was going through some arc of a mid-life crisis. We were led to believe he was sexually frustrated - hinted at a few times during the movie. BUT!... Close did have the versatility to appear outright deranged and almost ugly/severe. Sharon Stone is a natural beauty and I don't feel she could do "crazy" as effectively.

Sharon Stone could pull off crazy very easily. She seems like a crazy woman if you've read articles about her. Glenn Close was absolutely divine in this role and criticisms of her appearance are pathetic. Men who have affairs do it for a plethora of reasons. She was able to arouse him without looking like a playboy model. She pulled it off. End of story.

Of course glen is pretty enough, her and his wife were very similar. Just one blonde and one brunette. Sharon could have pulled it off too of course. I think she would have been more classy, not quite so psychotic
