This was stupid!

Evil Dead was a straight forward horror film, and a pretty good one, though a bit gory. I watched Evil Dead II expecting the same.

Man! Was I ever disappointed! This one was played strictly for laughs, and had more slapstick than a Keystone Kops movie. And Bruce Campbell was doing his best Jim Carrey imitation. What a disappointment!

I will view Army of Darkness next because it's the third flick in the trilogy, but I already know this one was played for laughs.

Yes, definitely a tonal change.

reply

A "tonal change"? You have a talent for understatement. I saw Army of Darkness, and it was okay, 7/10.

😎

reply

Did you like AoD better than ED2, Movieman?

reply

Yes I did, zephyr. How about you?

😎

reply

I see, Movieman, I see... Do you think this could be largely a case of busted expectations? Could revisiting it later on knowing what you're in for change things for you possibly?

I love all three, but 2 is the fave. I've always loved that it's truly a horror-comedy. It's silly and ridiculous, but also I think very creepy and demented! I did first see it some 20-odd years ago and was much younger than you are now, but it made a major impression.

reply

No, it's just not a good movie. I would rate them this way:

Evil Dead - 7.5
Evil Dead 2 - 5.9
Army of Darkness - 7.0

😎

reply

Holy smokes, Movieman!
Well buddy, to each, his ass.

😎

reply

"To each his ass"? WTF is that supposed to mean???

😎

reply

Isn't that what they say?

reply

What who says?

😎

reply

"They" say it... Turn of phrase. I think it means, like, whether you have the wrong opinion, (like say f'rinstance someone thinks Evil Dead 2 is not a good movie,) or the right opinion, (like f'rinstance, "Evil Dead 2 fucken rips",) everyone has and is entitled to their own opinion, and–end of the day, all good.

😎

reply

I've never heard anyone say that. Sounds like an insult to me.

😎

reply

Nah Movieman, we don't do insults around here.

😎

reply

Yeah right. Still sounds like an insult to me, especially after you said my opinion about Evil Dead 2 was wrong. And I've never heard anyone say that. That is not a saying.

Well I think it stinks, and your opinion is wrong, but hey, to each his ass.

reply

That is not a saying.

Well, I say it! 😎

your opinion is wrong, but hey, to each his ass.

That's the spirit buddy! You got it.

It's ok if you have the wrong opinion on this one, Movieman. I still love you. All good! Now let's get those shades back on, and keep on rippin', baby!

😎

reply

Whatever, asshole.

reply

MM, nooo! A Movieman post that ends with the disgruntled emoji and not the shades is a sad sight. I’m just givin’ you a hard time. I don’t want to make you sad. *hugs*

As a token of friendship and good will I extend to you, these shades: πŸ•Ά

Thanks! You made me LOL!

LOL! Good one, Wuchak!

I couldn't resist. :)

It was a great response!

😎

reply

It's pretty rad.

reply

The flick fucken rips.

reply

I’m assuming you’re not being literal when you say Campbell was doing a Carrey imitation since ED2 was filmed in 86.

reply

Regardless of when it was filmed, he looked like he was doing Jim Carrey.

😎

reply

My review of your review: Thumbs down. Big thumbs down.

reply

You're (OP) a tool.

reply

i'm OK with the trilogy.

probably parts 1 & 3 are more likeable. this one is kind of dubious.

reply

I agree.

😎

reply

i love the first one the most for its ugly low-fi brutality, but ed2 is a god damned delight.

it's always been funny to me that aod became such a favourite, as i'd always viewed it as the runt of the litter, but we're all entitled to our preferences.

reply

That's why they make pistachio and rocky road.

I hate horror movies as they aren't scary and stupid, plus I think they appeal to perverted people.

Anyway, in the early 90s my buddy worked in a book store. He closed up and said he wanted me to watch this movie with him and told me the name. I was like, oh shit, this will suck stuck in this store but he's my friend and so I will watch.

I thought it was hilarious and creative. I laughed at the lines and so many different over the top parts.

The thing about many movies is that they are wildly original when they came out. I saw star Wars in the movies when I was ten. That was FUCKING AMAZING! There was nothing like it. You can't be ten now and have the same reaction. You would have to invent so totally new type of movie to get that response. The same goes for this. I never saw a comedy horror movie that had weird humor I liked, or any other type.

It was so much fun.

reply

I agree completely about Star Wars. It was fucking amazing, and wildly original back in 1977!

As to Evil Dead II, we'll have to agree to disagree.

😎

reply

Okay!

😎

This one was funny and scary. Best of all the movies.

Nope.

Evil Dead 2 is a masterpiece!
