EVIL DEAD 2 is a gateway to the joy of Horror

I use to hate horror movies. I didn’t like being scared, I didn’t like seeing people hurt, and I sure as hell didn’t like the sight of blood and guts. That all changed one fateful, sleepless night when at an impressionable age I accidentally stumbled upon an insomnia induced, late-night cable screening of Sam Rami’s cult classic Evil Dead 2. This is my tribute to Evil Dead II . . .

I have NOT seen the 2013 movie but I've been itching to give it a chance.

I'm very hesitant about any remakes but I am also aware that often - especially in the horror genre - they can be just as good if not better. The Fly, The Thing, The Blob are all arguably better. And then there's Dawn of the Dead. Zack Snyder's film isn't better, but it's a fantastic reimagining.

I've had my heart broken by trailers, but there was something about the look and feel of the film that gave me a good vibe. A trailers job is to get you to see the movie so I take them with a grain of salt but this really one peaked my interest. I was just very busy with school at the time and never had the opportunity to get to the theater. Shortly after the release all my Horror fan friends recommended it.

I actually caught the last 5 minutes accidentally a while back and really liked what I saw. Raining blood was just absolutely fantastic. It's the kind of thing they could never do on Sam Raimi's original budget but it felt so true to his vision.

I did finally see the original Evil Dead in HD for the first time last year. Maybe that's what's taken me so long!

The 2013 Evil Dead movie is not really a remake(even though it reuses a lot of the same elements like a group of friends trapped in a remote cabin, being watched by something in the woods, deadites possessing people, etc). It's set in the Evil Dead universe, but not a remake.

Also, if you liked the humor of Part II, you should check out the "Ash Vs Evil Dead" tv series. It's hilarious (and gory!).

I saw the pilot and thought it was great! I need to watch the rest of the first season. They've already started shooting the second. My only regret is, I wish Sam Raimi directed all the episodes like Stephen Soderberg did with The Knick.
