reply

I saw it in English class. I was suprised at how good it is, seeing as how it didn't really touch the mainstream level.

reply

I also love this film! I first saw it on Tv in about 1987 when they showed it in two parts (I was only about 7) but i thought it was really good back then, love it now. I really like the fact its one of those gem of a films that not many people seem to know about

reply

you're right, the film is not well known enough. i saw it on tv when i was about 10 and i thought it was great but i haven't seen ot since.you just dont see it anywhere and i have been on the lookout for it on dvd, there are also a couple of books about it which i want to get.

reply

Um...the book came first and I would highly recommend reading that inorder to truly understand what these people wnet through, as it is completly based on their own testimony. Anyway, some of the facts in the movie are not accurate

The escape was the largest to suceed in history but it is really sad to think, which they don't tell you in the film, that only about 30 of the 300 escapees actually survived the war

There were in actuality around 600 who'd escaped from the camp and
of this number around 300 made it to freedom. The actual number
who survived the war is debatable. I do know that Soviet Army Lt.
Sasha Pechersky (Rutger Hauer's character) was one of those who
did escape and survived the war.

oh god, the part where he shot the baby and the mom in the head, everyone in my history class were close to crying. even the guys...

reply

yes i agree! I saw this in my History class a couple of months ago, and i was surprised at how realistic was. A lot of my history class were also close to crying.

reply

Yes, that's also my own most memorable part of the movie. That, and the scene where the naked boy tries to jump the wall and is torn apart by the dog, while the mother (also stark naked) is forced to watch with an SS soldier showering kisses all over her. Those kinds of scenes are not easy to forget, whether one wants to or not.

the first time i watched this movie was when i was about 7 (1997).my grandad just brought it on VHS!! and was watching it.i,at the time was not really interested in watching movies but this movie and the great escape were my first influences on watching movies.even now i love this film.

I love any movie that shows the germans in a bad light.

60 years on and believe me, they haven't learned a damn thing.

reply

I would really love to think that you are wrong about the germans not learning anything. I really hope they have. You obviously follow what is happening with the germans now whereas I don't. If you are right, then please pray that they learn the lesson soon.

I don't undersrtand what you mean. I work in germany a lot and also work with many german people. They would agree that there are still loads of extremists in germany but it doesn't seem to be any worse than any other european country i've been to - and that's quite a lot.

This was an incredible film, I was skeptical because it was bought at Wal-Mart for a dollar. But I was proved wrong, it was great.

reply

I honestly believe this to be the BEST TV movie I ever saw......brilliantly acted, and directed by an underated talent, Jack Gold.

reply

Yeah! I love this movie. I had to watch it in EVERY history class I took in high school...haha! But every time, I LOVED it even more!!!

reply

I haven't watched it at school, but just at home... And I love it! It's such a beautiful film, although it's quite strange that in a concentration campin Poland, English is the spoken language.. But that's not important to me, the language isn't as important as the content...
I had to tape to film, and I mainly did that because Rutger Hauer plays in it, a fellow Dutchman, so I wanted to know how his English sounded like. Of course, the film also sounded nice to me, for I've always been interested in WWII. And I have not been disappointed! This film has not had half the attention it should get!

~It's a kind of magic...~

If you want to see another great movie about what is was like in a concentration camp, go see The Grey Zone. This would also be a good movie for your history teacher to show.

I also highly recommend the books Hitlers Willing Executioners by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen and Night from Eli Wiesel. Also everything written by Simon Wiesenthal.
