What happens to them after the war...

Did anybody else find it extremely disheartening that Leon was assassinated later after he was an elected official (or something to that effect)? I tried to look up their stories on the internet a few years ago and learned more about them.

Love this movie, I think probably the best concentration camp movie ever made. A fellow teacher showed this in his geography class--odd, and I think a little inappropriate not being edited. But, the kids learned and got a lot our of it.

I read the book this is based on when the movie came out and it was very detailed on what happened to the main characters. If I recall correctly, one of the guards eventually showed up in a South American country; later he died under mysterious circumstances. Turns out some of the escaped prisoners lived near him. I thought it was a very well written book.

I understand the Guard was Wagner, the particularly nasty Nazi who kills the Mother and Baby.

If you wanna know more about the camp and Wagner then have a look on Youtube for a guy whose username is alanheath (sorry, don't have the link to hand and don't have access to Youtube right now). He has lots of videos of visits to the modern day sites of the camps in Poland and is a friend of Toivi Blatt, a Sobibor survivor (think he might even have been involved in the escape). There's a ten minute interview with Mr Blatt about Wagner.

Also, if you want more info on the camps and the escape attempts at both Treblinka and Sobibor I can highly recommend "Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka: The Operation Reinhard Death Camps" by Yitzhak Arad.

We saw it in Class Years ago too, theres no point whatsoever in editing what is a very important piece of History, it needs to be shown Warts & all, otherwise I think thats like making it seem as though it wasn't as bad as it actually was.

An excellent companion to this movie is Richard Rashke's book, "Escape from Sobibor." This will tell you substantially more about those who survived.

It is indeed sad that Leon survived only to be murdered.

You might also find Toivi Blatt's website interesting: http://www.sobibor.info

Information on the survivors can be found here: http://www.sobibor.info/survivors.html

It includes a confrontation with camp guard Frenzl: http://www.sobibor.info/confrontation.html

I remember the same reference at the end to one of the surviving guards having been killed under odd circumstances in South America some years after the war, and that at least one surviving inmate who'd been involved in the escape had been in the area at the time. Sounded to me at least possible that the Nazi had recieved some long-overdue justice for his behavior.
