Moses and Luka

I watched this film in History class, and afterwards me and my friend agreed that Moses must of been shot or stepped on a mine while escaping the camp. We also agreed that Luka either died, was killed or changed her name after escaping.

What do you guys think?

reply

I think they most definately were killed.I'm sure that Moses was shot or killed on the mines.People were running for their lives so it would have been easy not to see him on the ground. :(

Luka disappeared in the woods after the break; and sasha never saw her again? no one really knows what happened to her; except maybe she chanaged her name; moved to usa or the alps?

reply

I am sure that Luka made it out safely. She seemed like by far the strongest character in the movie, so chances are that she didn't die. Probably changed her name though, for safety...

reply

Sadly, I think Luka probably died, maybe shot by the germans or raped and killed.

reply

I should hope not...I hope she lived, and maybe got a "happily ever after" when the war was over!

reply

You would almost assume though that she would let Sasha or someone know she was alive. It mentioned that even he was looking for her...unless she just wanted to put everything behind her and move on...

In the book this subject is given more attention. Sasha had an emotional breakdown when talking about this with the author(s). Since that interview happened decades after the breakout and he felt that strongly about it, I'd say he probably put a lot of effort into finding her. The fact that nothing surfaced suggests to me she was killed in the escape or shortly afterwards.

reply

I would say that the evidence suggests both of them died, either in the escape attempt or very shortly after. Given the strong feelings between Luka and Sasha, it would've seemed logical for her to make at least some attempt to contact him if she were able, even if she had not wanted particularly to reconnect with anyone else from that period. And given that a great many survivors had a tough time learning anything at all about the fate of thier loved ones--witness Otto Frank, father of Anne, who did not discover the deaths of his family for many months after the war--it is all too possible that many other survivors, such as those close to Moses and Luka, who would NEVER find out the fate of other folks they'd known.

You have to remember that Sasha was in Sobibor for only 21 days. This is what Sasha said about Luka in an interview with Tovi Blatt "Although I knew her only about two weeks, I will never forget her. I informed her minutes before the escape of the plan. She has given me a shirt. She said, 'it's a good luck shirt, put it on right now', and I did. It's now in the museum. I lost her in the turmoil of the revolt and never saw her again."

Sadly, I think that the 2 of them were probably amongst escapees who got recaptured by the Nazis & sent to other death camps & killed.

Had they both survived, they would have for sure, got in touch with their loved ones after the escape.

Read the book and tells you what happened to them ; i know i have the book !

I think Moses was shown dead during the escape, meaning I assume, he was accounted for as killed?

Luka is unaccounted for, almost certainly killed during the escape. 'Sasha' looked for her extensively and as he gave key evidence in war crime trials, he probably did a thorough job.

I have read the book and have done some other research in regards to Sobibor and what probably happened is that Moses did make it into the woods but was killed by Polish partisans who hated the Jews. The Germans were good at keeping records and if the dead were among the mines or camp it would have been noted in some of their records. The partisans would not have kept such records. As for Luka it is quite possible that she made it through but was killed by the partisans or even by the Russian soldiers. Some of the soldiers did not like her and it is conceivable the killed her so she wouldnt slow down Sasha in their escape. Also, I have found conflicting evidence that Sasha did not marry until after the war and did not have a child until later.
