It was sake, Japanese rice wine. Sake is a big part of Japanese culture and has always been used in certain ceremonial situations. Kamikaze pilots flying off to their death had such ceremonies before they took off.

Have had my experience with hot saki when I was in my 20s and do not want to revisit. My head felt like something exploded inside of it the next day. (BTW it was an extra tall bottle my friend Mei brought over so...challenge was accepted).
