Just watched again tonight.

Gotta say this is the first time I've watched the movie in a long time as an adult.

Do places like this even exist anymore?

Do families take vacations like this anymore?

who can even take three weeks off in a row and go on a family vacation ? I wonder if in the future places like this pop up again it seems things always come back in style. Wonder if there would be a market for people to go and live like it's the 60s for three weeks like this. No tvs no phones etc

Further my point the ending is beyond sad when the owner says it's all slipping away. He was definitely right.

Vacation resorts like the fictional Kellermans sadly don't exist like that anymore, they were a product of their times (50's and 60's) and were pretty popular back then. Sadly a vacation like that wouldn't fly nowadays...dancing lessons, talent shows...that was considered exciting for kids back then, nowadays teenagers would find that stuff boring and they'd be glued to their phones all day long.

The beauty of those times...and I wasn't even alive back then (wish I was sometimes)...is that people interacted with each other more, no internet and no social media meant socializing with people face to face. Going on a vacation was more about relaxing and meeting new people (dancing, playing games etc) then it was about exciting adventures and visiting exotic places like most vacations seem to be about today.

It was just a different time.

Indeed, another major factor of the resorts disappearing was that they were originally created for Jewish people to go to due to being excluded from the mainstream resorts in the country as a result of bigotry and racism. However, after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, banning discrimination of any kind in the country, the original purpose of those resorts became obsolete.

I was with you until you started talking about that "blah blah blah phones and Internet is bad Thomas Edison was a witch" bs....
But yeah, what that other person said, product of the times not because of the 60s being 'different' necessarily, at least not in the way stated earlier, but because of discrimination.

Fortunately for the OP, the word "phones" was literally his LAST WORD

I just watched it again also and it never fails to send chills to me when they dance
Those places in the Catskills did exist and there were activities all day and evening No Tv and of course no Internet
I believe they were built as a vacation for Jewish folks because they couldn't get into some of the other resorts
I attended many conferences there at The Concord, Grossmans and a few others
There were several bars and one huge dining room . The menu had several choices but the waiters pushed out what they were trying to get rid of

All the food was kosher so no milk for your coffee .
A few times, having partied heavily the night before I sat with my table mates while the enjoyed pickled creamed herring and they had no mercy for my roiling
stomach

watching the bit where everyone is in a dance class early on and the girls were participating with the oldies made me laugh. no teenager would do that now

It happens, although I wonder if most husbands were like Moe - worked during the week and only came up on the weekends.

I can't imagine anything worse than a holiday like this! So stuffy, talent shows, cabaret, the same people every day for 3 weeks.. what happened to exploring and discovering new things? I guess it would be good for families with young children as it's safe and has activities for them but as an adult, I would feel fed up after a couple of days of this! We have similar types of holiday camps Haven Holidays or Centre Parcs but all I kept thinking whilst watching this was how inappropriate the relationships were between the staff and the customers!

Something that always bothers me about this movie is the part where Johnny's cousin and Baby are carrying the watermelons. Watermelons arent that heavy. It makes zero sense Johnny's cousin and Baby would struggle carrying those watermelons like that.
