Great unexpected ending (spoilers)

Caught this film midway on AMC the other night as I was flipping and thought : "Yikes ! DEATH WISH 4 ! Let's see how bad this is ..." Then saw the rollerskating shootout (hmmm, not bad) and then the scene where Ryan takes the girl (Kay Lenz ?) hostage and Bronson follows them. So I'm thinking : "OK, Bronson's gonna shoot the bad guy and save the girl ... Yawn" but NO WAY !! Ryan actually SHOOTS THE GIRL !! (not with one shot, mind you, but a SHOWER of bullets from his AK-47 type gun !!) We even get a gratuitous shot of the girl on the ground, her back towards us turned into a bloody mess ! Man, this movie has balls !! (funny thing, like another poster said, is that once he's killed Ryan, Bronson doesn't even bother to check girl for signs of life and just walks off towards the end credits)

I just watched and do though feel there is a major flaw in the ending scene.

I expected Kersey to at least go to his girlfriends' body smd moreso, carry her body away from there. But he just walked away.

I did too, he probably was before the cop showed up. I think he knew she was gone though.
