Why is the protagonist of this story portrayed as such a lazy unmotivated nitwit? No woman in her right mind would want such a loser as a husband!

That's only because he was sick. He said it himself! He had the heart for music and was going for it until the headaches started to become overwhelming. After he had to quit music, he didn't have the passion for anything else. It's kind of unfair to call him lazy when his health was deteriorating. That's why the angel was there in the first place. He was dying.
