I can't believe this movie has been rated only by a handful of people. This means very few people have seen it - that's a shame.

do you think people really want to know the truth? Anyway, no words are needed to describe such a fantastic fim.

I would like to agree with you, but unfortunately, i stopped the tape just after steve biko dies (which is just about 1/2 through the film).

The movie is great!

The movie is good for people who want to learn about Apartheid and Soweto uprising and life in SA during the 70's and 80's.

I think that the movie also shows that not all white South Africans where pro-apartheid, and the bitterness between Afrikaners and English (white anglo-africans) in SA.

It shows a realistic picture of how the police "stopped" demonstrations and how the SAP spyed on people during the apartheid years.

The SAP 3step way is visible in the movie. With the 3step way I meen how the banned people. If you went over the line 3times, you where banned and if you continued you could actually get killed (white or black).

If you want a different perspective, though equally dated, it's worth reading "My traitor's heart" by Rian Malan. It certainly doesn't contradict in any way, but does provide a more broad-reaching view, particularly of South Africa in the '80s

Cry Freedom has to be one of the best movies ever made! Completely un-hollywood, no soppy sentiment and heart-strings being tugged. Denzel - you are one of the greats of our generation. The portrayal of south africa seems so archaic, yet this was the late seventies - truly unbelievable. Being a New Zealander, I feel almost ignorant for being so unaware of the black mans' plight in South Africa. I knew they had it tough, hell they still have it tough, but I didnt comprehend that the police actually went looking for trouble. I now completely understang the ban on touring south african sporting teams prior to the 1990's. Absolutely terrific!

What a coinincidence I remember going to local cinema's with my enitre grade at school back 1987 when the film was relesed.

Though it's not normally the type of film I would normally watch, it is still a better class of movie than many of the more Hollywood orientated movies of today.

I saw it again last night, and noticed some things made more sence this time around. Back in the days of my high school years it completly went over my head that Steve Beiko was murdered and then was seen to be walking around and talking to Kevin Cline's character on phone towards the end of the movie. This of course was showing a shot out of sequence, a flashblack. Something I wasn't familar with back then.

This would also have been the only movie I had seen Keven Kline's first & only non-satirical character.

It's the best movie about apartheid issue I've ever seen.Denzel was real scene-stealer in this & it's a shame he didn't win Oscar for this, cause I think it's one of his most convincing & real performances ever.He disappeared in Biko's character so effortlessly that you really could feel how much soul he put to this character. As with Malcolm X,Denzel made me feel like Biko was still alive.
Kline did his job too.
Beautiful, touching movie. The ending absolutely blew my mind & for the first time in my life I can honestly say I cried watching a movie :((((
