Would this film be good for....
A presentation to show what the apartheid was like in South Africa? Are there any scenes that would be good to get the point across?

shareI think that the movie Sarafine would be better. Because it better shows where they lived, what children went through in the prisons, and how the Afrikaaners put black man against black man.
sharewell why don't you watch the movie and find out :)
Some of the scenes earlier in the film depict are best personally i think the courtroom scene and the preceding scene is an intellectual sort of scene that can be talked about more in a presentation
but of course the treatment of blacks is shown in some of the police raids
In short: Yes.
Better still, read the book.
A better movie to get the point across might be "A World Apart."

I suppose it all depends on who you want to get the point across to.
What I really like this movie for is all the really straighforward quotes from Biko. I think those make this movie hit a lot of really important nails directly on the head.
shareOverall, the movie won't suit your purpose. But certain scenes help - Biko in court, Biko giving a speech at the soccer game, his massive funeral.
What really hammers home the point, is the ending - the Soweto massacre. If anything, that scene shows the horrors of apartheid.
To the OP, I recommend you do show this to a class of students but it can also been enjoyed as a film with great performances. The book does delve into subject more and other books too.
A recent one I read is The Politics Of Cruelty by Kate Millett. It covers regimes in different times and countries and deals in a section with apartheid.
There are other good books like one I am reading at moment called Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane. It tells the story of the degradation and brutality that black people suffered under the regime through the eyes of a youth growing up there.
Also I very highly recommend Country Of My Skull by Antjie Krog who is a poet and a broadcaster. You will hear stories of abuse and horror dealt with by the Truth Commision.
Cry Freedom remains an important film though and for younger people not wanting to read political or socio-cultural books then a film is a good way to start with them.
