Anybody else think Denzel should've won the oscar for this?

I really don't get why the academy chose Sean Connery over Denzel Washington. Denzel Washington played Steve Biko really well and you really felt for him and his cause. You also felt sad when he was wrongly put to death by the racist government. All Sean Connery did was play the same role he would end up playing for the rest of his career.

It was a strong, strong category that year. Albert Brooks, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington were all deserving. Don't remember Vincent Gardenia and I didn't care for The Untouchables or Sean Connery's performance.

I think Morgan Freeman should have won the Oscar and Golden Globe for Street Smart.

I agree. Street Smart was pretty negligible as a film - a typical lurid 80s thriller - but Freeman was dynamite in that breakthrough role.

It’s a tough call between Freeman and Albert Brooks for me.
