Is this movie making light of date rape?

I had to quit re-watching it because to me it was.

How? Because Tom faked a tear for a victim of date rape? The victim seemed to appreciate it if anything.

I don’t recall the victim appreciating him refilming his fake reaction. We don’t see what the victim thinks of it, and only see that outtake later in the film.

You can hear her off camera marveling at his ability to tear up on demand, "Oh, it's amazing" according to the CC

No, quite the opposite. (spoiler) The main character (Holly Hunter’s) turns on the William Hurt character for staging his tears in his interview with a victim. She screams at him at the airport about it.

Huh? Really? As others have commented, nothing of the sort. Perhaps you could elaborate what gave you that impression???
