I am here looking for the exact same information! Diid you ever figure it out?
shareShot in the dark here, might have been . . . Manu Chao?
shareIf I remember correctly, it was Daniel Lanois, French Canadian composer and musician who is better known as a producer, having produced such albums as Peter Gabriel's "So" and U2's "Joshua Tree" among many others. He has several albums of his own out. If I am correct, then the song from Broadcast News is from his first album, "Acadie". BTW, someone asked me this very question today, so I was attempting to find a soundtrack to check on this - so if anyone sees this post and can validate this, I'd appreciate it as well!
shareThis was playing this afternoon on TV and I've always wondered about this song. I decided to see if it was listed on imdb and under soundtrack there are only two listings - the two songs Albert Brooks was listing to during the special report. They list L'Edition Speciale written and performed by Francis Cabrel courtesy of Editions 31 (Paris) records. The other was Midnight Train to Georgia. I hope they're right because I plan on looking up this artist and trying to purchase the album.
shareOf course it's "L'Edition Speciale". Here are the lyrics:
D'abord y'a cette fille
Dans la boite de verre
Qui dit "Bonne nuit, a demain"
Sur un bout de musique
Des bonshommes a l envers
Et puis apres plus rien
J'etais la a huit heures
Pour les mauvaises nouvelles
Elle m'a laisse tout seul
Avec mes envies d'elle
Derriere son visage
Un paysage de neige
Et puis apres plus rien
Apres je prends mon pote
Sur la radio locale
Au milieu d'un discours
C'est le temps qu'il espere
Au-dessus de son bocal
S'il arrive a faire jour
Parce qu'il parait qu'y a le feu
A la moitie de la terre
Et qu'on attend du mieux
Juste pour les sagittaires
Apres un dernier verre
Le souffle des etoiles
Et puis apres plus rien
Et puis apres plus rien
Et puis apres Edition Speciale, Edition Speciale
En couleur naturelle
Mes envies d'elle
Et puis apres Edition Speciale, Edition Speciale
En grandeur nature
Ses yeux sur le mur
Et puis apres je cherche
Quelqu'un que je connais
Qui soit encore debout
Faut pas que je me leurre
A l'heure qu'il est
On doit pas être beaucoup
J'ai du mal a dormir
A cote de personne
Le silence m'attend
Je l'entends qui resonne
"Allez, salut bonsoir!"
Le bruit quand je raccroche
Et puis apres plus rien
Et puis apres... Edition Speciale...
Quand je me leve
La fille dans la boite de verre
A deja dit bonjour
Mon poste est reparti
Dans une autre colere
Sur un autre discours
Mais la nuit arrive vite
A ceux qui ont peur d'elle
Y'a des choses qu'on evite
Pas facile avec elle
Apres-midi tranquille
Apres-midi banal
Et puis apres...
Et puis apres...
Edition Speciale

Does anyone have an English translation for these lyrics?
sharewere you ever able to find a copy of that french song? I seem to remember Pierre Ben-Susan in the song credits, but was never able to find that song on any of his albums.
shareSinger is Francis Cabrel and song is Edition speciale. Album is on amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000DEOSZ/qid=1100043008/sr=1-7/ref=sr_1_10_7/202-3336029-2245410
To find both the lyrics and artist in one hit is much appreciated. Seeing a recent re-run 'that' tune has been fixed in my ear for a day or two. I hadn't realised Broadcast News dates from 1987....enjoyable to see the recent re-run.

To you happen to know the name of the album? Looked on Amazon - many albums - some didn't list all the tracks. Much appreciated if you know. Thanks
shareI have (almost) all of Cabrel's music. It's sensational, especially the album "Hors Saison." Some of the stuff, especially Presque Rien, are among the most moving ballads I've heard.
I too became hooked on his music after hearing that snippet on Broadcast News, but I HAVEN'T located Edition speciale yet--But I'm on the hunt.
Other very good albums are:
Fragile
Sarbacane
Samedi Soir sur la Terre
The last one has a single called La Corrida that is haunting, esp. when you translate the lyrics
