What does Joan Cusack say...
In the scene where they're all watching the date rape piece, Joan Cusack mumbles something under her breath to Holly Hunter... anyone know what she says?
"Danny's not here, Mrs. Torrance"
She says: "My cousin Donna." She is indicating that her cousin was date-raped too.

shareNo, that was not her cousin in the interview. If it had been, I'm pretty sure Holly Hunter's character would've already known that, and thus, there would have been no need for Joan Cusack to tell her. Cusack was just indicating that her cousin Donna had the same, or similar, experience as the woman in the interview.
shareI think it's made pretty clear that the woman being interviewed IS her cousin Donna. There's no reason Jane would have known that; she's watching the piece for the first time, and had until then intentionally stayed out of it, so Tom could do a piece on his own. It also makes sense that someone would have had to introduce Tom to a date-rape victim, and when Cusack's character heard what kind of piece he was looking to do, she might well have made the connection for him.
Just an opinion, of course, because there's nothing in the movie that states it flatly one way or the other. But her comment and the accompanying gesture and expression seems pretty obvious to me.
I always took the line to mean that the same thing happened to her cousin Donna. I don't think it is clear at all that the woman on the tape actually is her cousin Donna. I am not saying that it couldn't be interpreted that way or that it was/wasn't the filmmaker's intention. Just saying it is unclear enough to be open to interpretation by the viewer.
shareI also assumed she meant something similar happened to her cousin, because she says it to Jane in the middle of the piece almost matter-of-factly. It never even occured to me that it actually was her cousin, but it is possible.
