a question about the end

I know this is a somewhat stupid question, but I just wanted to make sure about this.

Tom & Jane go on to work for the same network after the layoff, with Tom going to London & Jane taking over as a Chief Producer/Editor (I forget her title). However, do they still work for the same network in the end, when they meet up again at the conference ? I never really understood that. Jane is speaking of a new promotion she is about to accept, and Tom is the anchorman - but are they both working for the same network ?

reply

They are working for the same network. Tom is getting the chief anchor job (Jack Nicholson's). She is taking the job as his managing editor, so they will be working together again in NY.

The chief anchor of network news can also be the managing editor, giving him final say on the content of the news (for example, Tom Brokaw for many years on NBC). In his speech, Tom says that he was offered Bill's job, but he only wanted to be anchor, not managing editor - there are people far more qualified for that. Thus, Jane was offered that job.

reply

oh wow - I didn't even catch that. Jane is getting that job just because Tom wanted to only be chief anchor - and not also managing editor.

Somehow I wasn't able to make that connection. Thanks diamondolls.

Yeah, I believe the last thing he says to her is something like "see you later boss!"

But the broader implication is this:

7 years ago, Jane was up on her high horse about journalistic ethics. Tom was a fake, a pretty boy, an empty suit who looked good on camera.

So she couldn't have a relationship with him. In fact, she really couldn't even work with him and keep her self respect as a professional journalist.

At the end it's 7 years later and what's changed? nothing. Yet she's going to be the brains behind the operation.

And speaking of 7 years later (IRL, not in the film), there's one key difference: she's no longer dating him....at least we should assume so since he's married, she's now his boss and she says "...there's a guy..."

LOL>

I have not been to this thread since I posted 7 years ago.

It was a mere fluke that I clicked in to it today and what do I find?

After 7 years someone answered my post only 3 days ago. How's that for timing? it could have just as easily been 15 years.
