set in the year it was made, that was this clever?

I think they may have ceased making them.

"Night Falls on Manhattan" comes to mind, but your point is well taken.

It was set eight years before the year it was made. Either that, or the last scene was set in the future, in 1995. That doesn't change the point, though. There are few movies this clever any more, with dialogue that good.

You are suggesting that this is the single best movie of the last quarter century? That seems pretty far-fetched. It was OK, but not even the best film released in 1987 - that honor goes to "Hope and Glory".

ugh...hate this movie and Holly Hunter's character...re-watching it now to try to figure out why everyone loves this movie and don't understand...boring and awful characters

For one, this movie has some of the best writing ever done in American cinema. It's clever, funny and incredibly prescient.
