I direct your attention to Le Sauvage (1975), wherein wacky beauty Catherine Deneuve is chased by a deranged fiancé all over Venezuela and disrupts the orderly life of recluse Yves Montand. This story was later "yuppified" and set in Los Angeles.

It was a trend in the '80s for American comedies to copy French comedies. The examples are so many to mention. But in some cases, even the director was the same.
