Agreed on both points. But, Blake Edwards the man who directed this film is a big part of why it's so funny too. Nobody, and I mean nobody portrayed rich, successful, neurotic people quite like Edwards. Watch SOB or 10. Hilarious!

Its an undemanding, fun film for a wide audience. No agenda's, no subtext.

A similar film nowadays would be targetting a specific demographic group.

I agree with OP totally, The crap that passes for comedy today is just awful. What in hell has happened to US films? TV is actually better. Millions and millions of dollars spent on sucky movies with horrible "stars", Adam Sandler being the prime example.
