i recently caught this movie on t.v. today and wow memories. i remember loving this movie when i was a kid and one thing i remember to this day still stands out. did benji get saved at the end of the film? i notice after he lets the mountain lion take the cubs he sort of sits back on the mountain top and looks depressed. right after that you see his owners helicopter start to fly a little above him but somewhat in the distance....then right after that shot the credits come up. so did they see him or what?? i was always puzzled by this because it would have been depressing to know that they never found him and left.

The way *I* always interpreted the ending is when the helicopter pilot was flying over, they saw him and took him back home

I interpreted it as the helicopter lowers on the hilltop, but the freakishly strong wolf comes back from his long fall and kills benji, his owner, and the pilot. Then the wolf flies the chopper to Bora Bora for a little R&R.

It seemed like they tried to convey that he was rescued, but I don't think they did it well enough. Because of the way the movie plays out, you never see Benji with his owner, the entire film. It would have been nice to see him jump up and be hugged and kissed at the end. Instead we get a completely ambiguous chopped off ending.

Or they could have maybe made it more obvious with his owner calling for him?

Anyhow, for The Terminal, Steven Spielberg could have ended the movie about 2 minutes earlier and the audience should have known how it ended. I think an ending that drags is worse than a movie that cuts off early.

This was a film about a loved pet getting tortured by the wild. Getting a hug from his unrelenting owner at the end wouldn't be "dragging it on". It probably would have been the most emotional scene and would most likely have elicited an ovation. The current end is
like "eh, hope he makes it" cold, heartless machine overhead that has already failed Benji repeatedly.

His rescue was implied but the ending cut off too soon.
