Which kitten was killed?

I agree its hard to tell if the mother cougar had a kitten or one of Benji's
kept following her. If one was killed was it the smallest one that Benji
kept saving?, building a rock pile etc. This kitten did wander a lot and could
have wandered after the mother.

Another point I was confused on was after Benji ran after the hawk he
encountered the smallest kitten in a big rocky area and it looks like
that kitten was safe. Was it a flash back of the hapless little kitten
in Benji's mind or the actual hapless following kitten safe there or was
it one of the other kittens. Lets say a kitten did die...was the the the
one Benji and the audience cared the most about;the dark small one who was
always indeed of extra help?? That would have been really cold as in
going much to far and would have ruined the movie.
