They're actually quite different films. Bad Taste has a fresh, raw quality to it whereas Braindead is much more stagey and melodramatic. The sfx are better quality in Braindead, as you'd expect from a bigger budget movie, but there's more goofiness in Bad Taste. Both are definitely worth seeing.

The type of humour's alot different aswell.

I agree. Jackson is on record as saying that Bad Taste is NOT a horror film, which I think is right (if you think horror films are intended to scare peole, and there is nothing scary in BT). Whereas Braindead was always intended to 'scare the pants off people' (Jackson's own words). I don't think Braindead is scray either, but some people might. So there we have it: the main difference is that BT is a comedy with gory moments while Braindead is a gory horror film with comic moments.

I prefer "Braindead" as a movie, it's just that bit better formed as a story. Peter Jackson's love of continuity shines through in both though: if you still haven't seen "Bad Taste", or if you're planning on rewatching it look out for the journey of Derek's bayonet; and also, if the concept of Robert's 'gruel' wasn't foul enough, remember what he was eating beforehand...

"Bad Taste" has to be seen just to admire as an achievement: that is one single-minded bloke.

I personally find Braindead/Dead Alive the better film.

I prefer Braindead. It was way funnier, and did not have boring scenes like Bad Taste has. This said, you really should watch both, and I suggest you start with Bad Taste.
