I was just looking at the credits and saw that Brad Bird was one of the writers.
You know, Brad Bird who wrote and directed Ratatouille, The Impossibles, and Iron Giant! I also saw he wrote one of my favorite episodes of Amazing Stories "Family Dog".

You can see his talent and the seeds of The Iron Giant. I also thought the robots looked a little like a cross between the lamp creature that Pixar uses and something from Star Wars (ILM strikes again).
