ExtraTerrestrial Artificial Intelligence

That's what the spaceships were. Since they were from another "planet", they were referred to as "aliens". In reality, they were robots in the form of miniature spacecrafts, but with personalities. The term "aliens" usually specifies flesh-and-blood creatures from another world. I heard a slight "rumor" several(back in the 80's) years ago, that the original plot for this movie was going to be a Short Circuit/Bicentennial Man type theme. The spaceships were going to be unused, secret government, prototype, unpiloted aircraft that came to life after Frank's desire for a miracle came about, and they came the tennants' aid. Wouldn't have been as cute, but would've worked.

That was fairly self-evident, I thought; who was disputing that?

No, it doesn't. If that's what you tend to think of when someone says "alien," then that is your own misconception. Because no one's made any mistake in referring to the beings called "Fix-its" in the movie. "Alien" doesn't even indicate "from another world;" it can equally refer to a being from a country or area not familiar to ones self, from a purely subjective POV. To clarify: the definition of an "alien" doesn't necessarily indicate organic or mechanical, specifically. In fact, the noun definitions for "alien" are: 1) a creature from space; extraterrestrial. 2) a foreign being; a resident born in or belonging to another country. 3) a person who has been estranged or excluded. A "creature" is anything created, whether animate or inanimate, or an animate being. A creature could easily be as mechanical as organic. An alien is simply an "unknown being" ...so...there ya go.
