Well, maybe because she was a huge monkey wrench on his cogwheel.
He was headed for college football but was injured due to Peggy distracting him by yelling at him while he was on the field.
All she was to him, was dead weight.
Al was a loser because he decided to be one. He gave up during High School, even though he got the hottest women there. Sure he may consider her a burden, but Al thought of Peggy as ugly and worth resisting all her come ones. Any real man, even if mad at her, would have gone for her in bed as she put on her sexy voice and tight lingerie and whispered things like "My tushy yearns for you"
shareIt's not that he hated her or thought she was ugly. The thought behind the show was that wives are annoying and nagging and sex with them was a chore. It doesn't make a difference who the wife is or what she looks like, it's simply the fact that it's your wife. Of course he loved her which is shown in several episodes. Ed Oneil gives a better explanation of this than I just did
shareI agree he didn't hate her, but he did say many times that she was not attractive. Things like "take your clothes off I need something to spoil my appetite" Or while taking her pic, Peg says to take one so you'll remember me when I was beautiful, Al replies, "you going to get worse" Or Peg saying I'll make you forget all about food, and as Al looks at her he says you've already done that. Peg was not so wonderful to him for sure, but Al was downright mean and trashed the best things about his wife. If nothing else she was beautiful, hot, sexy and showed it, he really missed out on that
