Favorite Morse Moment

I can not believe I waited this long to check out the series(mostly due to its age), but what a remarkable piece of work this is.

My favorite moment was from Series 3, Episode 4 - The Secret of Bay 5B. About 25 minutes in, there's a scene were Morse and Lewis enter a home to search it. At some point, Lewis is holding a radish and a burger bun and after a quick exchange about the case, Lewis asks Morse if he had butty (I'm guessing English slang for butter). Now, a sane mind starts wondering if Lewis brought bread with or if he's just helped himself to the owner's food. But then you let it go.

The best part of this was Morse goes back to talking about the case and Lewis returns eating his sandwich. When Morse finally takes note of Lewis, the exchange is hilarious.

Morse, in his Morse-like way, asks Lewis if he managed to find himself something for his sandwich and Lewis being the young, oblivious one responds. The look Morse gives him is just too damned funny!

I can't think of one favorite Morse moment...they're usually insignificant things having to do with his facial expression or some sarcastic comment he makes to/about Lewis---it's all in the delivery. There was a scene from "Last Seen Wearing" in which M & L were questioning the headmaster/other staff person of an elite school for young ladies and Lewis apparently made some remark about tuition whereupon Morse tells the headmaster that Lewis is making inquiries about this with the thought of sending his daughter to the school. But you know darn well that this school is out of Lewis's league. If I think of something more specific, I'll be back....

Trying to think of the scene, but that made me laugh anyway. I have the entire series and will have to look up that scene.

It is a "Butty" - which is basically slang English, certainly used in Newcastle but elsewhere too, typically a chip butty or a cheese butty and so on. Very rudimentary, bread, butter and chips (thick fries - US). Lovely with Tomato Ketchup.

As for my Favourite Morse moment it would be "You're sweating Morse, it is a disagreeable sight" - Masonic Mysteries.

Thanks for the explanation.

So let me get this straight. A butty is a sandwich consisting of bread, butter with a filling of thick fries?? Cheese butty also contains cheese?? Bacon butty also contains bacon?? Or does a butty contain potato chips (crisps)?

reply

A butty is a sandwich, of any kind: chip butty, cheese butty, bacon butty....

Chips in England are what Americans call fries.

Forget it Jake. It's Chinatown.

Another good one in Last Seen Wearing. After being told not to upset the father by Strange, Morse immediately goes to see him. "Morse? Are you the drinker?", "I don't know. Are you the tyrant?"

Not a funny one, but I like the bit in Deadly Slumber when Brian Cox offers Morse an undisclosed chunk of his fortune and says (IIRC) "You could go anywhere you want." and Morse replies, "Yes, I could. But what would I do when I got there?"

So many to choose from.

My favorite Morse moment occurred on the pilot of Endevour when young Morse meets up with the newspaper editor (Abigail Thaw) and they look at each other and one says to the other, (something like) "Haven't we met before?" Abigail Thaw is John Thaw's real life daughter and has a reoccurring role on Endevour.

Awwww... that made me sad.

When Morse attends a guy's funeral and asks the widow out at the funeral! and she says yes.
