The Prophecies I and II: LeMay Leaves

SPOILERS

The Prophecies I and II:
Season III, Ep. 1 and Ep. 2
Micki and Ryan travel to a French village to help Jack stop a fallen angel from fulfilling evil prophecies.

What the hell, they wrote LeMay out of the series by turning him into a kid and having his mom take him home? Then Steve Monarque sort of takes his role over the rest of the series? Stupid. They should've just had LeMay's character die in France. I was just praying for this two parter to end. They could've just killed Lemay off in one episode.

I actually thought that the way Ryan exited the show was unique and kinda cool. Although thinking about it, Ryan dying would have been interesting too. They probably didn't go down that route because it would have been too depressing a subject to deal with -- the death of one of the show's protagonists.

I didn't think it was stupid at all. I mean, it's very possible for Ryan to return to a child on a show about the supernatural. Stranger things have happened on this show. In fact, I thought it was rather unique and clever exit. That way, it leaves the possibility open that he could some day return. I'm glad Ryan was not killed off. It was bad enough that he was no longer on the show. Killing a popular, beloved character was not necessary and probably would of angered a lot of fans.

Or he could have stayed an adult, but with a severe case of amnesia.

I guess LeMay wanted to leave the show for a while and when they started season 3 they thought of a way to take him off the show in a style that could have brought him back if he wanted to. For a lot of people they like it and find it interesting with him turning into a child, for me I feel he really should have died giving his life via The Exorcist. I love his last time "Pray for me." before dropping to the floor. In my eyes he was killed off. I think had they really killed him they could have shown how even tho Johnny came he could ever fill the empty space Ryan left for Micki and Ryan. I think D LeMay leaving was a HUGE reason along with the time slot change in the show ending. I mean I'm a massive fan of the show and I still haven't given the third season a chance simply because it didn't seem the same without the Ryan character. I think what they should have done had the show hadn't ended was plan it to be five seasons and have them use a cursed antique or make a deal with Luis to bring Ryan back to his true form, forgetting everything.

Yeah, killing him would have been kind of predictable. Although it would have underscored how dangerous what they do is. Still, trust me as a long time "Supernatural" viewer having characters drop like flies can get old fast.

I seem to recall hearing he wanted to leave the show to pursue a movie carrier and I think he said he got tired of doing it. I know a lot of actors have said that series TV is a lot of work, early mornings, late hours, little time off.

In any case he did pop up in a movie (ironically a "Friday the 13th" movie)but I'm not sure what he did after that though I think he did do some stuff.

It's hard when a main cast member wants to leave. Still, I think Johnny did bring in a new element to the show as he was much more a man of action and he was a bit younger and not as initiated into the whole occult thing as Jack or even Miki so he was still kind of unknowing and prone to make mistakes.

I liked Ryan, of course, but it seemed like all they could think to do with him was give him one doomed girlfriend after another so it was nice to see that chain broken at least.

If the show had lasted longer it would have been nice to see him show up as a teenager in an episode or something but that would have required a recast.

Maybe if they had more time before Ryan left to have Ryan AND Johnny on it would have been a much smoother transition.

Third season writing was the weakest of the three seasons. In my humble opinion, many of the episodes were just too far "out there", even for this series.

They did kill him, when you think about it.
Most of his life erased, the man with those memories and experiences gone, wiped out.

It's just in his place comes a kid; an innocent blank slate with the potential for a life not steeped in evil and misery and death, by which Ryan was feeling haunted.

When you look at it from the calculating standpoint of 'options for removing a character', there's death, disappearance, an other (bizarre).
They went with other because it was thematically tied to the religious elements of the show, not necessarily just as a cop out.

We sometimes demand a sort of ruthlessness to keep a show tense, but we shouldn't take a question like this from a standpoint presuming that it MUST be death, and that there should be some reason for it not to be.
It's limiting, and when we have that expectation, the death of a character becomes gratuitous.
...in my opinion
