As of right now, it has both the most votes and lowest rating of the series. I honestly don't get it. I've only watched the first season so far, but this episode is one of my favourites. What's so bad about it?
I agree. And it has one of my favorite actors, Denis Forest, as well. The only bad thing I could say about was that the villain's comeuppance was rather anticlimatic.
I love Denis Forest too! And I agree about the ending, though I'm not sure how I would have changed it. Perhaps it would have been better if Micki hadn't been saved so easily.
My guess is that a large number IMDBers check out this particular episode because it has a famous director, Atom Egoyan. And they are disappointed (and vote accordingly) because it doesn't match the calibre of his film work.
I didn't enjoy "Cupid's Quiver" as much as other episodes of this series. "Faith Healer", directed by filmmaker David Cronenburg, is one of my favourites.
"What fun is it being cool if you can't wear a sombrero?"
I'm a hardcore fan of this show, but some of those early season one episodes are just terrible lol (Poison Pen, Cupid's Quiver, The Great Montarro, A Cup Of Time, Helloween, etc). I mean, they are entertaining and I still have a fondness for them, but they just aren't as strong as the later episodes.
I don't remember much about it but I DO remember being annoyed by the laser beam that shoots out of the statue when it attacks someone. That seemed kind of sci-fi to me. Also, as I recall, it moved some and the effect (even for the time) seemed a bit bland.
Denis Forest (RIP) was pretty on fire but the story was fairly predictable. I've only just started the series and enjoy the characters but do hope all the episodes' don't just involve a back-and-forth of the article.
I just watched it the other day and gave it an 8-star rating. I was stunned to see both the high number of votes and that its rating was so low (I was the 160th voter and unable to budge it up from its 4.8 rating).
Here's what I liked:
Denis Forest as Eddie was perfect. He sure could play the sicko stalker with aplomb, like when he's mouthing "I love you" to the girl being stung to death. That was an inventive way to kill a person, reminding me of something the abominable Dr. Phibes would think up.
The frat house humor upending a lot of stereotypes, like the suave, handsome guy who can't get a girl pouring his heart out to Jack, who is disguised as the bartender. When Jack runs out the man, a good steward of frat funds, shouts after him, "Shouldn't you be tending bar? We're paying you by the hour!" That small role added something to the episode because the actor put a lot into it.
The unexpected twists, like when Eddie's crush, under the spell of the arrow, calls him and arranges a meeting. I thought she'd go and have to be rescued a second time, so was surprised when it was Micki. And even more surprised when Micki fell victim to the arrow, though that wasn't really developed as it could have been.
I liked the statue too--really creepy, especially when it moved. Yeah, the laser-bean "arrows" were a little cheesy, but not distractingly so.
I really only started watching Friday the 13th in its second season when it came on after War of the Worlds, so many if not all of these first season episodes are new to me. I'm thoroughly enjoying them, including the unjustly maligned "Cupid's Quiver."
I didn't realize it was so hated. To me the only thing I had an issue with (and it's been a really long time since I've seen it so I might not be remembering it exactly) was that weird laser beam effect they used when the statue was used on someone.
I realize they had budget limitations and technical limitations but it was a bit 'sci-fi' phaser to me. Seems they could've come up with something more mystical or maybe just the sound effect of a bow being fired or something.
