You kind of have to suspend disbelief for this one- like when Tom Cruise is a fighter pilot or Tobey Maguire is a superhero.

shareThere were quite a few sports themed movies that came out around this time; "All the Right Moves" (football), "Vision Quest," (wrestling) etc. "Youngblood" is probably the best of them. Why? Because it lacks the stupid corniness found in other 80's movies. That wrestling film for instance, was horrible. It was supposed to be about wrestling, but %90 of the movie focused on a very cheesy romance between a high school jock and an older woman living in his house, with huge 80's hair, and a sappy, nauseating love song that seemed to play every 5 minutes. With "Youngblood" you get what the film promises; HOCKEY. It really is a 'hockey movie,' and goes to lengths to show every aspect of the sport. And it doesn't shy away from the violent nature of hockey either. The personalities of the players was very authentic; super-aggressive guys who seemed to prefer throwing punches and breaking heads on the ice, to chasing around a puck. Considering this was an 80's film, i really thought they would gloss over the rough stuff and make it sweet and family-friendly. They didn't, and I appreciate that. It is also extremely well-filmed and edited for the most part. I can't imagine anyone interested in hockey being "bored" by this movie.
