Gutterboy: Skank!

Skank: Yeah.

Gutterboy: Who is that guy!

Skank: I don’t know, but whoever he is, he’s weird and pissed off.

Quite possibly the best line out of any 80’s movie.

Skank: (As Sheriff Loomis approaches) Man, I smell a cop. You smell a cop?

Gutterboy: I smell French fries Skank, but that don’t make no sense now, does it? 😀

The coolest car in television history, and features 80’s, mega-babe, Sherilyn Fenn. Not much to not like about this one.

reply

One I like:
Packard: Looks to me like you ran out of those all-beef patties kind of EARLY today, huh?
Billy: Hey, don't worry Pack, we still got plenty of dog food.

reply

Haha! Thanks for the reminder Gluserty. I’m going to have to sit down and watch this one again, as I don’t think that I’ve seen it in its entirety since the 80’s.

The Wraith (1986) - Garage Scene

Oh wow, I recorded this film back in April 1988 off of HBO, and through three moves I kept the tape (this time, the house is condemned, so the tape stays) all this time, and have revisited the film from time to time. I don't think you'll lose anything from a re-watch, as I think it holds up (there's a theme to the Jake character, a line of dialogue he has at the end that he says to Keri, which I can relate to). I just think the film has much to offer: fun story, great soundtrack, and an interesting cast (he he, I think Sherilyn Fenn is the only main cast member not related to someone who was already famous). I hope you enjoy!

reply

Thanks. Never thought of it before, but indeed, we had a Sheen, a Cassavetes, a Howard, and a Quaid, in our cast. Randy Quaid was still at the top of his game back then. Actually, one of my favorite scenes was with him at the aircraft graveyard. I thought the guy that played Gutterboy was a riot! :D

reply

Is this kinda like ghost rider

reply

Never saw that one Capt, but I’m vaguely familiar with it. Similar synopsis I suppose, but in the wraith, the main character comes back from the dead for revenge against those that murdered him. Also, he’s weird and pissed off (If you ever see it, you’ll get it :D)

reply

I never heard of this one and I just had a sheen movie marathon.

reply

It’s not one of his better known films CB, and is mostly forgotten today, but I thought it was pretty enjoyable. Check out that clip that I posted above for an idea. It also features an in her prime Sherilyn Fenn. Hint: There’s some brief breast action :D

reply

I do like boob

reply

Thing is, my recording of "The Wraith" has Sherilyn Fenn's topless scene edited out, as is the more longer & more explicit scene with Packard & that blonde back at his crash pad. I wasn't aware of the longer versions of the scenes until a few years ago.

And that my friend must constitute a crime of sorts. A felony I do believe :D

reply

True, it is a felony on "The Wraith" (since the film takes place in Arizona, their justice is a little light, so they got off with a warning). Sherilyn Fenn made up with this oversight, however, by starring in 1988's "Two Moon Junction", where she showed her full moon, amongst other (as Helen Mirren would say) naught bits.

reply

Haven’t seen two moon junction, but it sounds like the type of film that was made for Ms Fenn. I mostly remember her from twin peaks. I did happen to catch her in the remake of mice and men. I generally don’t care for remakes, but that one was well done.

reply

I've never seen Fenn in the "Of Mice and Men" remake, but I liked her comedic turn in "Fatal Instinct" (I thought Sean Young was fun there as well), along with the relatively obscure 1991 film "Desire and Hell at Sunset Motel", and alongside Danny Aiello in 1992's "Ruby". Yeah, she's marvelous in "Twin Peaks" (the whole deal there is quite remarkable, if you ask me), and since you haven't viewed "Two Moon Junction", you could give that a look. Now, I'm not sure if "Boxing Helena" is your bag (I consider it an interesting experiment) but at least the Tears for Fears song "Woman in Chains" is on the film's soundtrack!

I’ve definitely heard of it, but I have never seen it, so I checked it out, and it does seem like it could be interesting. After all, anything that features Bill Henrickson, and Red Forman can’t be half bad. And for anyone that disagrees, Red can remind them of their bad think, by inserting his foot into a very sensitive part of their anatomy :D

reply

Ha ha, yeah, Bill Paxton & Kurtwood Smith are totally in the film as well, although they're not given much to do; the bulk of the picture is Julian Sands & Sherilyn Fenn, though the way Julian Sands' s character acted in the film, it would've been helpful if Red Forman vandalized his ass with his foot, that may've set him right. Big Love to Bill Paxton though, gone too soon.

reply

Haha! I was going to use the full foot up the ass reference, but since you never really know who’s on the other end, and what their values are like, I try be careful about offending anyone. After all, it could very well be someone’s youth pastor or grandparent :D

Yeah, definitely a bummer about Bill Paxton. I don’t think that he was in anything that I didn’t like him in. Funny, but in later years I saw him in many a feature, but didn’t initially tie him to the same actor from weird science, that played Wyatt’s older brother Chet. Whom, as I recall, was kind of an a-hole 😀

reply

Ha, yeah, I get what you mean, I always try to watch how I word things, offline as well: I figured since you're familiar with Red Forman and his catchphrase, I'd use one of my favs from his arsenal:-). Hey, something that might be overlooked from "That 70's Show": the love story between Red & Kitty, which I think is pretty nice.
Honestly, I too forget about Paxton's role in "Weird Science" for the most part (I remember the film though, but I haven't viewed it as much as some other films of that era; although I've grown fond of Judie Aronson, the actress that played the brunette love interest in the film, from her latter day Camp Crystal Lake doc interviews) as his part in "Near Dark" ("Did I ever tell you the story about Buffalo Bill?"). usually comes to my mind first. I think Paxton's career really came of age during the 1990's (at least for me it did), and up until his sudden passing I was giving the TV version of "Training Day" a whirl mostly for his central role. I figure if the show was a ratings smash his role would've been recast, but I have to admit I'm glad that didn't happen.

reply

Did I ever tell you the story about Buffalo Bill?

Don’t recall that ever coming up?

My time flies. It’s actually worse when you’re easily old enough to remember the 80’s first hand, and yet, it doesn’t seem all that long ago. But it most certainly was! :D

reply

That line came while Bill Paxton's Severen character is being goofy at the bar (before things get wild): he puts a beer glass to his mouth, has beer foam all over his face, and says the line. The only reason I know it so well is that I had "Near Dark" on DVD for years, and in the supplemental material for the film (3 discs in total; nice package all the way around) Paxton talks about that and the "Finger-lickin' good!" line as well.

reply

Thanks. I missed this one. Initially banned in Sweden. Hmm? Might be interesting. Sounds like one that the haemophobia [sic] crowd should definitely pass on :D

reply

I didn't know that "Near Dark" was banned in Sweden (I am aware of the "Video Nasties" phenomenon in the UK though); it's like werewolf western that didn't do as much box office as it could have due to "The Lost Boys" (I've always loved that one too) premiering around the same time, although they are vastly different films.

reply

I found that tidbit over at IMDB, gluserty. I got a chuckle out of reading it:

Near Dark was at first banned in Sweden, due to the films graphic violent nature, and the zero-tolerance policy of the Swedish censorship board, but was finally released on video in 1989. However, this version is brutally cut omitting almost all violence, shown, as well as hinted. Scenes missing include ridiculous cuts of a bloodsucking and more seriously, deleting the entire sequence of Calebs' initiation in the bar.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093605/alternateversions?tab=cz&ref_=tt_trv_alt

Removing such scenes, would be like omitting all the gore scenes from a movie such as Jaws, which leaves you with movies featuring vegan vampires and sharks 😀

reply

Yeah, there sure wouldn't be any point of watching "Near dark" in Sweden; looks like you'd see more blood shaving than in their version. I don't know what all the hysteria is about anyway, the film isn't some gorefeast, it's more character and dialogue-driven.

reply

Yeah, I thought Randy Quaid was pretty great in the film (remember the scene where he has the gang in the station and he's making paper people with scissors, except they're all missing heads?). What I like about Quaid's filmography is that he alternated from playing very serious people (after this film he was in another film with Charlie Sheen, 1987's "No Man's Land", where again he plays a copper; I'm also very fond of that film. It has Bill Duke in it!) to playing total goofballs (probably the strongest examples are the "Vacation" films).

reply

Also, Griffin O'Neal is in the cast: son of Ryan, brother of Tatum:-)

reply

Right. I had forgotten all about him. He seems to have largely disappeared. The family has been plagued with a good many problems over the years it seems, and the family patriarch won’t be winning any father of the year awards any time soon, from what I’ve gathered :D

reply

Yeah, Ryan O'Neal seems perfectly awful.

reply

To elaborate a little, it appears Ryan O'Neal did no favors when it came to his kids (angry at Tatum for her "Paper Moon" Oscar, introducing drugs to the equation to both Tatum & Griffin, pointing a gun at Griffin, etc.). I don't know, it seems like the O'Neal kids had it rough; they would've been better off taking their chances with Randy Quaid:-).

reply

Thanks for the info. I did recall the suggestion of meth to Tatum, for weight loss. Also remember something about Ryan punching out Griffin. I saw Tatum in something not too long ago, and she aged rather well, and still looks quite attractive. Ever see those world’s greatest dad mugs? Well, you won’t likely be seeing either Griffin or Tatum walking around with one of them. Well, you might, but the name Ryan won’t appear anywhere on it :D

Too bad about Randy Quaid. He really was a pretty decent actor, and I’m sorry to see him hit rock bottom the way that he did.

reply

Yeah, that's about the size of it when it comes to Ryan O'Neal; seems he placed a lot of obstacles in front of his kids that they had to overcome (Tatum also said something about her father hitting on her a Farrah Fawcett's funeral, not knowing that it was his daughter. Like you said, Tatum O'Neal is an attractive woman, but that just wasn't the time or place for such a matter:-).
Besides, if Ryan O'Neal was given one of those "#1 Dad" mugs, he'd likely break it.
Yeah, Randy Quaid and his wife seemed to have some issues for awhile there, but it looks like things have settled down for a bit; sounded like a real mess though.

reply

Tatum also said something about her father hitting on her a Farrah Fawcett's funeral

Holy smokes! That’s something that sounds as if it should be featured on Ripley’s Believe it or not, or categorized under “Worlds Most Awkward Family Moments” :D

reply

Yeah, that's messed up on two levels. I mean, Ryan O'Neal loved Farrah Fawcett right, wanted her to marry him (I heard she wouldn't; then again I've read different things about their relationship)? I just think it's disrespectful, you know? Okay, hitting on people at a wedding (preferably when single), I can understand. I don't know, maybe I've become a fuddy duddy:-)

Sheriff Loomis: "Road blocks won't stop something that can't be stopped."

reply

Yep, that’s a good one PV.

Now I’m reminded of another.

Rughead: You have to lift your hood. We have a digital radio killer. If you try to run, we zap your electronics.

Hood of the Wraith car lifts, exposing something other worldly.

Rughead (Astonished look on his face, with eyes wide open): Oh My God!
