as a tv show

hello fellow vamp fans!
i'm rob heathers; an aspiring tv/film director.
does anyone else here agree with me that this movie should be turned into an hour long comedy? ...on network tv... ...NBC, to be exact?
I've been writing an informal screenplay adapting the movie to tv. however, i'm starting to have my doubts if it is such a good idea or not.
any imput you guys? good idea or bad? would trying to get this off the ground be good or embarrassing?
what would you do in my situation?

In my opinion, the problem you have here is that Vamp wasn't exactly a hit and even hit movies often times spawn TV pilots that crash disasterously. Any network is going to probably either roll their eyes or just plain laugh. Not that it's a bad idea, mind you. But Vamp just didn't make enough of a splash, in my opinion, to really get the suits to listen to you. That's like me going in and saying I want to do a Maximum Overdrive (another great horror comedy from '86) show. They'd laugh me down the hall. Now, I'm not sure what kind of connections you have but I think you might try developing your own subversive vampire comedy. If you go in with something new they might be less apt to say "why's this guy trying to sell us a retread of a movie he wasn't even involved with?".

But... it's tough to say. Part of the allure of Vamp, to me, is the nostalgic Eighties feel. Grace Jones, DeeDee Phiefer, those great neon-lit walls in the background. It'd be hard to bottle that and make it a show.

Another thing that strikes me is how you might do every episode. Vamp is a kind of fish-out-of-water/lost-in-the-city story. Would your college kids simply be unfortunate enough to fall into the hands of monsters every episode? Or are they now vampire hunters?

Also, another hard thing to do is validate, for the network, that there are enough Vamp fans out there to get them good ratings. And truly, there aren't. So what you would have to do is convince them that the show is fresh enough to bring in a new demographic aside from the movie dorks like myself. Buffs like you and I would remember Vamp, but the suits at networks would have to Google it if you know what I mean. You'd have a better chance going in with a spin-off show for a movie like Underworld or , say, Robin Williams' RV.

But that wouldn't be fun now would it?

Good luck and best regards.

p.s Keep in mind that Richard Wenk has been doing close to nothing the last few years. His last project was writing the screenplay for 16 Blocks. If you got ahold of him and got him excited about it that's one more industry connection you've got. You can walk in there alone, but imagine if you walked in to pitch it with the guy who made the film. Don't get me wrong, that's nowhere near the gold key to the crapper but their ears might perk up a bit more.

Hey, and I see that you're a Courtney Love fan. Her and Tom Waits are my favorite songwriters of all time. And a Vamp fan? You, my dear fellow, have quite good taste.

Regards,

Jeff.

yes, and i reviewed your comments about "trapped", i don't care what you say about trapped, but HOW DARE YOU RIP 200 CIGARETTES!
200 cigarettes and who's that girl are my top two favorite movies... EVER!
they are amazing.
i actually have scripts for 200 cigarettes (a sequel and a tv show; however they would take place in the ultra-early 90s {it's been close to a decade since it came out})
i also have to say that your profile looked cool. i too am a mopar/chrysler guy. we are few and fewer in between. my dream chrysler co. cars are a 1941 Plymouth Deluxe Coupe and a 1966 Imperial Crowne convertable.
hell, i even have the plymouth sailboat logo tattooed on me.
but then again i also have the original geo logo on me to (i think you'll likely dock points from me on that one).
well, you take care and thanks for the advise.
oh, and the Vamp tv re-make would take place today, and it would be set up that the AJ character followed his friend back to the school.
it would be vampires at an upstate new york college. so vamp meets saved by the bell college years, but with the neon.

Don't get me wrong, I liked 200 Cigarettes. But being that Courtney is one of my favorite songwriters (and that's what I think she should be remembered for) I hate to see her take "slutty"-type roles. Her next slated film is a Linda Lovelace biopic. NOOOOOOOOO! She's actually a decent actress but she picks the absolute WORST movie roles. She needs to focus more, at this point I think, on doing what she should be remembered for, her great albums. I think she's got a lot more beauty and grace then she gives herself credit for.

But no I liked 200 Cigarettes. I'm a Paul Rudd fan also so I definitley liked it. And on top of that I got a thing for redheads and Love makes a great redhead in that one. But I'm saving myself for Rose McGowan. lol
