Does anyone else out there think that old Donald P. Borchers and company took their neon, florescent red and green imagery in Vamp straight out of Dario Argento’s Suspiria? The similarity is is there isn’t it? I wouldn't have put it past Donald and co.
I didnt get that with descent, it triggered the obvious memory of blair witch.
I used to watch Vamp sooooo much, but I've hidden it away as I was wearing out my already damaged VHS copy (I taped it off of BBC2) I've never seen it on TV since or available to buy over here readily.
Yes, I totally think he ripped off "Vamp" & we're not the only ones who think that!!! The similarities are just too much to ignore. "Vamp" was way better!!!
This is certainly very, very, very, very late into the discussion (4 1/2 years since the initial question was asked), but I just saw "Vamp" for the first time and definitely got that "Suspiria" vibe to some degree from the strong colored lighting. However, whether "Vamp" was inspired by "Suspiria" (and "Inferno") or not in this regard, one thing I do know is that Argento was actually inspired by Mario Bava's use of color in his films; and actually, "Suspiria" is Argento's homage to Bava's films. So it's more of a Bava thing, not Argento.
Even later into this discussion but I remember when this came out reading in Fangoria (aah happy days) that the lighting team insisted on the pink/green look much to the director's chagrin. I presume because it was his first film he didn't have the power to force them to light it properly or fire them. It does give it a unique look for it's time, and yeah I can see the Argento influence but it is ridiculous at the same time!
