Where the hell does this movie take place?

Forgive my ignorance here. But I was confused by the fact that these guys attend what seems to be a *huge* university but have to drive 2 hours to get to an actual city? It was filmed in L.A. but I'm wondering where it's supposed to take place and what school...

It was definitely filmed in L.A. but where the actual events in the story take place is never specified. Not even a fictional name is given. I like that they chose this route because it lends to the "alternate reality" feel of the movie.
