I think it was a standard cherry red Gibson SG...but don't quote me on that.

No, it's not an SG. It isn't a Gibson model at all. The body & headstock shapes give it away: It's either a Fender Stratocaster or a Squier (Fender's Korean made cheap line) Stratocaster-like guitar, in Candy Apple Red color. The reason I say 'Stratocaster-like' is because it has a single humbucker pickup, whereas a Strat normally has three single-coil pickups. This guitar also has a black painted headstock, which was typical of a lot of Squier guitars at the time. Back in the BigHair days, Squier might have made a single hum guitar like this. I'd have to check out the old catalogs. But that's most definately a Strat or a Strat-clone.

It's hard to see the pickups on my worn out vhs tape, but I agree, it does look like a Fender headstock.

The front of my vhs box shows him with a red B.C Rich Ironbird.

That's Correct, Sir. There's a red B.C.Rich Ironbird on the DVD cover as well.

Yeah, it's definitely a Stratocaster knock-off of some sort. I used to have an Eddie Van Halen guitar made by Torch. Looked exactly like a Stratocaster with the EVH striping on it. That was about 20 years ago.
It could be any make of guitar as you could buy the body and neck from any guitar shop, slap it together and have your very own Stratocaster.
