Cool movie, but I could have done without Fastway.

Looking at Sammi Curr, I don't imagine him sounding like Fastway. I'm thinking more like Metallica or better yet, Mercyful Fate. That's my only problem with it.

reply

that soundtrack is amazing.
it almost makes the movie in my opinion
and this is my favortie horror movie

reply

To each his own, but in my book, Fastway sounded like almost every other hair metal band around at the time. I think Sammi was designed to be not your typical rocker. I don't hate the soundtrack, I just think there where better choices out there to compliment Sammi's menacing nature and look.

reply

This was a great soundtrack. If you're 30 like me you get it. If you're young I can see why you don't. "Skippy" from Family Ties got to be a stud in this movie. I doubt Michael J. Fox was jealous though. lol

reply

I'm a child of the 80's too! Who else but one would know who Mercyful Fate is? Don't get me wrong, the soundtrack worked for me waaayyy back in the 80's. But now that I'm older, I see a couple of other options that were around at the time that they could have used that would have matched the Sammi Curr character alot better.

reply

["Skippy" from Family Ties got to be a stud in this movie. I doubt Michael J. Fox was jealous though. lol]

God, that's funny!

btw - is your handle in reference to The Stand?

"So shines a good deed in a weary world."

reply

ACTUALLY I THINK THEY SOUNDED LIKE AN 80'S VERSION OF LED ZEPPELIN.

reply

The soundtrack was awesome!

reply

WELL THE MUSIC WAS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME,SO I DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU RMIND IS AT.BUT YOU MIGHT WANNA CORRECT IT ASAP!

reply

So what your saying is that Fastway puts you in the mind of Sammi more that somebody like Mercyful Fate would? OK. Whatever floats you guys' boat. But in my book, Fastway doesn't sound like the ultimate satanic rocker that comes back from the grave. Sammi was supposed to be different than all of his contemporaries, not sound the same as everyone else at that point. But this is just me, to each his own.

reply

ACTUALLY FASTWAY IS JUST A MORE COMMERCIAL VERSION OF LED ZEPPELIN.

reply

"ACTUALLY FASTWAY IS JUST A MORE COMMERCIAL VERSION OF LED ZEPPELIN."

That is a ridiculous statement.

reply

So, I should get my head checked because I don't agree with you? Is that it? Sorry bub, but I'm free to think what I want. But, since you picked this scab, is Fastway your choice because that's what they used? If you made this movie, would they have been your choice or would you have opted to go with something a little more menacing than a band that sounded like everyone else in the 80's? Even someone like Dio would have been a better fit. Believe me, I am a big 80's metal fan, too. But in my book, Fastway was a never was. What have they done other than this movie that's reached the ears of more than 12 people? Nothing. Great band, they are. Please. The premise of the movie was great, the cast was great, Sammi as a character was great, but the soundtrack blew.

reply

I'LL GIVE U ANOTHER SCAB PAL.DID U EVEN KNOW THAT THE GUY THEY USED FOR SAMMI CURR WAS A SOLID GOLD DANCER?AND HE WAS EVEN GAY AND DIED OF AIDS.NOW I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR COMMENT ON THAT ONE.

reply

I don't really see how the actor's personal life had anything to do with Sammi Curr the character. In fact, I could care less about this little nuggett of knowledge. I still think he pulled off the role in spite of his gayness. Next scab, please. On a side note, how did we get from whether or not Fastway was the best choice at the time for the soundtrack to delving into the actor who played Sammi's personal life. That's a pretty big jump.

reply

Also, Rob Halford is queerer than a $3 bill, but that doesn't make him any less of a metal god, does it?

reply

FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD HE USED ONE OF HIS SOLID GOLD MOVES WHEN HE WAS PLAYING HIS CONCERT AT THE HIGH SCHOOL HALLOWEEN BALL.

reply

O.K. And...? What does that have to do with this film? And how does it apply to the soundtrack?

reply

My o my, what is it about the internet that makes people so dogmatic with their opinions that there is absolutely no room in peoples mind for compromise or even a willingness to accept that other people might have a different opinion. I too am a child of the 80's, I thought this film was excellent, a real feel good film, and I have the soundtrack on vinyl, but I have to say , even though they did a great job with the soundtrack, Fastway were a weak band, their other albums were dreadful, and I also agree that if I were making that film Fastway would not be my choice, but I wonder if someone like Mercyful Fate had done the soundtrack would it have retained that comedic 'feel good' atmosphere that the film has.

reply

[deleted]

Thanks for interjecting some reason on this forum. These people act like I hit their mother or something. I will agree that changing the soundtrack would in turn change the feel of the film. But that would have been a good thing to me. I think that Sammi Curr,as well as the whole film, wasn't meant to be looked at as comedic. Someone like Mercyful Fate would have placed a more serious tone to the whole thing. It's about music that is as menacing and as dark as the character.

reply

MERCIFUL FATE?KING DIAMOND SINGS LIKE SOMEONE IS SQUEEZING HIS NUTS!

reply

FASTWAY WAS A GREAT BAND!

reply

WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE GUY WHO PLAYED SAMMI CURR U DINGBAT!

reply

King Diamond trained as an opera singer and has a 16 octave vocal range, so yes, he does sing 'like someone is squeezing his nuts', which actually sounds a lot more evil than the cliched deep growling that many heavy metal bands would opt for if they wanted to sound demonic. And actually, only you're talking about the guy wo played Sammi, everyone else is talking about whether fastway were best choice as the voice of Sammi Curr!

reply

WHO CARES HE SUCKS!HE'S GENE SIMMONS WITH A GOATEE!

reply

Do you even know what your talking about? You must be a real hardcore Fastway fan. I didn't know there was such a thing. Anyway, Fate was the first band I thought of when I thought of who could have made Sammi Curr as evil as he should have been. That doesn't mean they were my only choice. There were plenty of bands around the time the film was made that would have done the character more justice.

reply

i can see what your saying about choosing a more metal or evil sounding band i agree. but at the same time i love the songs but i also agree that fastway before that were kinda weak. im sure when they made the movie they were looking for a pop metal sound so they could sell records as well as make tons on the movie. side note why do people get so friggin mean on these boards?
lets just talk about a movie we like sheesh

reply

It's the freedom of typing whatever you want on these boards without any fear of reprecutions that makes most people forget their manners. I agree with you as far as why they chose Fastway. Thanks for seeing my point as well.

reply

The Guy who played Sammi Curr isn't even doing the vocals in the movie. The Voice that was dubbed in is Dave King. Fastway did suck pretty bad. I enjoy Dave's Current band "Flogging Molly" much better. At least they stand for something!

I think the Alice Cooper idea would have rocked. That was a great post, usinoh.

My pleasure, it's always refreshing to read posts written by people who actually know what they're talking about. Also, thanks for turning me on to Wednesday 13. I owe you one. Also, I second the endorsment for Lordi. They kick serious a$$.

reply

[deleted]

I've seen Black Roses. It's funny because for a while now I thought I was the only one who knew about it. Your right, it's cheesy, but it's very metal for the time. Musically, the few things I've heard from Wednesday 13 recently puts me in the mind of Marylin Manson, which isn't a bad thing. Also, I agree that seeking out Lordi cd's is well worth it for true rock'n'rollers everywhere. Great rock'n'roll + over the top theatrics =success in my book. Lordi is the total package. Plus it doesn't hurt that they are big KISS fans. That's how I discovered them, it was through KISS' website. You know your Rock'n'roll for sure.

Love this forum. Nothing better than debating about metal.

I just wanna say that opinions are all valid and that's why forums are great. I guess it's how things are posted that make the difference on whether you get flamed or not.

Trick Or Treat...I bought the DVD the other day after finding it in some obscure EBAY site. I hadn't seen it for about 15 years and i gotta say it took me right back. I loved this movie when it was released and i bought the Fastway soundtack and had the poster on my wall. I think i loved the fact that it was one of VERY few mainstream movies that actually recognised that metal existed, and i remember rewinding the video to see all the album covers and posters that Eddie had (and was over the moon to see that the bands i loved were getting exposure). I'm from Australia and i never got to see any metal on mainstream TV for quite a while, so it was great to see METAL anywhere.

I loved the Fastway soundtrack and i still do. I agree it's not that evil at all, but the music is still rockin and commercial enough to keep moviegoers on the seats.

i would have given WASP my vote for the soundtrack, personally, as i think Blackie Lawless was definitely like Sammi Curr, being that he was dark and raw with a satanic edge, but still not to over the top musically to scare non metal lovers.

Alice Cooper is a reasonable one. Could be cool too. I'm glad Paul Stanley didnt get the part cause he just would have looked to gay to be evil. Sorry KISS fans (which i am one too). King Diamond was an interesting choice. Didn't think he was still remembered. I personally don't think the music would have been a good choice (his voice may have put many non metalheads off with the higher pitch). The whole upside down cross thing an the face makeup could have worked though (King Diamond always looked the goods).

Maybe they should have just got SLAYER to make the soundtrack and went all out Satanism. But the movie is still enjoyable and i'm just happy that 20 years later we are all talking abut it..

cheers
BobRonnie

reply

i have actually heard that blackie lawless was asked to play sammi but im not sure how true that is.

reply

anyone know of any truth to that rumour??...i would think Lawless would have jumped at the chance??

Unless I am mistaken, Iced earth is an american band.

Still great though

There are other countless european bands that would are just as good

reply

FASTWAY WERE GREAT.NOW FLOGGIN MOLLY,THEY SUCK!

reply

YOU ARE THE ONLY CLOWN THAT I KNOW THAT DOESN'T LIKE THE MUSIC FOR THE MOVIE.

reply

LOOKED NOTHING LIKE A ROCK STAR!

reply

Fastway is great. You must be kid. In the 80's, Fastway was the sh!t.

reply

I love this movie... I was never a huge Fastway fan back in the '80s but after buying the DVD several years ago and hearing the band's music for the first time since God knows when, I'd say that their stuff fit the film rather well. Yea, Fastway were nowhere near as "evil" sounding as the plot line called for but you have to keep in mind that the movie studio was probably looking for a band that was "heavy" ONLY as far as mainstream MTV or radio was concerned, in the hopes of possibly getting a hit single from the movie soundtrack on the radio. (I vaguely remember a video for one of the songs getting some MTV play when the movie was current, but I can't remember which one...) Mercyful Fate's image and lyrics definitely would've been more "fitting" to the storyline of the movie, but back in 1986 that band was still very underground and their material would've been so "shocking" and "out there" to the average Hollywood producer that even assuming they'd even heard of the band, the movie company probably wouldn't have touched them with a ten foot pole... (I think M.F. were already defunct by 1986 anyway, and King Diamond had already started his solo career.)
Another perfect band probably would've been VENOM but again, they were too underground at the time, and no "hit" potential for radio...

Good to see some fellow headbangers on this site who love this movie as much as I do!! And to those propping up Wednesday 13... good call. I just got his new CD "Fang Bang" and it's pretty killer stuff.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE SONG HEFT?NOW THAT WAS AN EVIL SOUNDING SONG.

reply

Now heres what i find funny. There wasn't a thread started on this movie until 5 months ago and the film is 20 years old. We all watched this again at relatively the same time this many years later. Personally i love this movie just for the period it's set in and the memories it brings back. Much less the technology less world we grew up in

I had never heard of this movie until I saw it listed with Halloween themed ones in a movie review book earlier this year. I do find that somewhat suprising, as since 1982 I have been a big fan and watcher of horror movies. However, it did open and play in theaters from late October until (likely) early December, 1986, and I was in 1st semester of my freshman year then, in a remote college and dorm and on other things, so maybe that is how I missed it. I was also 18 then (born March 5, 1968), but unlike alot of teenagers and early 20s (high school/college students), I was never a fan of rock music at all, and had absolutely no interest in it, even then. My sister, however, was a huge fan of it from about 1987-88 until the early 1990s, during late high school and college (like countless other teen/early 20s females-I think they are rock music's top fan group). And in an interesting coincidence, it opened in theaters on Friday, October 24, 1986, which was her 16th birthday. This is a very big birthday if one is a girl (called sweet sixteen), and even had a movie about it, called Sixteen Candles, from 1984 (starring my fellow 1968 borner and 1986 graduater Molly Ringwald, who, like me, was really 16 in 1984). But I don't know what my sister did for her 16th birthday on this day (after getting out of 11th grade), though I'm pretty sure she did not go to see this movie (though she liked both horror movies and rock music, maybe should have). But I always have loved Halloween, and with it approaching I really would like to see this movie, and if it is on DVD I will as soon as get acess to it. As for this thread, I had never heard of Fastway, or Mercyful Fate, so can't say about that, though I have heard of Metallica, as well as Guns 'n Roses, KISS (my sister and a college friend went to a concert by them in July, 1990), Heavy Metal, and Bon Jovi (her favorite). They are the only rock music I have ever heard, as I did watch some of one of the tapes of theirs my sister had, in 1990.

Fastway's singer was named Dave King who is now the singer for Flogging Molly.
Fastway were good for what they did, crappy name for a band but I have seen Flogging Molly many times and they rock!

Are you feking serious??? How could he do that! Fastway kicked A$$,Flogging Molly sucks worse than anal rape. I honestly can't believe it.

i kind of dig the fasway soundtrack, but i think your right. a darker, heavier soundtrack (ala: metallica, megadeth, mercyful fate, samhain & motorhead), would have been more appropriate. watching back, the whole hair metal thing doesn't really fit...

even some ozzy would have been cool.

reply

Maybe a darker, heavier soundtrack will be used in the sequel!

WITH ALL THE NAMES THE 80'S BANDS HAD YOU ACTUALLY THINK IT WAS CRAPPY?WHAT ABOUT CINDERELLA?GREAT BAND,HORRIBLE NAME.

reply

FASTWAY IS A COOL NAME FOR A ROCK BAND,HOW COULD U SAY THAT?SO YOU WOULD SAY CINDERELLA IS A COOLER NAME FOR AN ALL GUYS ROCK BAND THAN FASTWAY?ALSO FLOGGING MOLLY SOUNDS LIKE A CHICK BAND.

reply

The movie had to appeal to a broader audience to sell tickets. Fastway was pretty palatable stuff. Did you hear King Diamond on the radio a lot in the 80's? -Me either!

reply

Hmmm oddly enough hearing the soundtrack album on a friends pre-recorded cassette made want to see the movie. When the soundtrack album came out on CD I bought it immediately.

Prior to this film the only place I had ever seen Fastway's albums was in CD bins at the stores.

reply

I can go one better. I had the Trick or Treat soundtrack on Vinyl. Yes...you heard me, VINYL! It was cool because it had photos on the back cover and in the liner notes that weren't on the cassette, CD or even the DVD. Then an ***hole aquaintance of mine stole the damn thing. Never saw it or him (Dave Fisher) again. And do you think I could find it in the stores afterwards? HELL NO! Thank God for CDs is all I can say...because I found it on that format a few years later.

You SUCK, Dave! Gimmie back my vinyl copy...it was so much better than my current disc.

reply

I love this soundtrack. I love this movie. I say "no" to a re-make.

The horror-rock band The Punk Rods (www.myspace.com/thepunkrods) actually has a song about "Trick Or Treat" called "Nail 'Em All" - and the song actually got a "thumbs up" from Marc Price himself! How cool is that?

reply

Chalk up another one to Fastway kicked a$$ on this. Fit the look or not.

reply

When I first saw this movie I was like "A shame they didn't use more known bands like Maiden, Dio, Queensryche, WASP etc.", but the more I see the movie the happier I am that Fastway did the job. Most of the music is original for the film, which is cool, and it's very commercial yet heavy and Dave King's voice has a lot of aggression (which suited Sammy's character well) So I say the soundtrack is perfect!

reply

I'M GOING TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS SO MY OPINION IS REALLY HEARD. THEN, YOU SHALL KNOW THAT FASTWAY WAS/IS THE GREATEST METAL BAND TO EVER WALK THE EARTH. DEVIL HORNS, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.

Oh, and I love this film. It's a Halloween staple for me.

reply

ROFL @ all caps. Fastway was a good choice. That other dude, jjsomethingorother is obviously a Mercyful Fate fan - nothing wrong with that.

But Fastway on the soundtrack SCREAMED '80s, which fit the movie just fine.

reply

Metallica and Mercyful Fate weren't nearly well known enough for a 1986 Hollywood 'mainstream' movie. Probably 10 years later that might have worked. But it was 1986, so Fastway, well, say what you will! ;)
