I saw the movie again the other day. Sounds like more like an incursion or a skirmish to me.
The other side was denying the incident and we didn't suffer any casualties. Assuming we were able to rescue our disabled ship, then no, this incident wouldn't have led to anything.
In fact it may have even led to an easing of the tension in the area. The Migs had been flying near our ships for months, and the tension was high. They tried to get aggressive with our fighters, we laid the smack down, now they'll back off.
The whole engagement reminds of me of a country like Libya who liked to talk but couldn't back it up when things got really tough.
We won WW3 in five minutes.
