Harold Robbins Jaqueline Susane joke?

I know it was intended to be funny. It is obvious that Kirk is familiar with these authors. Spoke responds, "the greats". Are we to infer that these authors are revered in the future? By Kirk or Spock or both?
Or is it just a joke, period.

I always assumed Spock was being sarcastic.
