I think this was an economic decision more than anything. I didn't mind the Hobbit music that much, though.

By this time, Horner's Khan themes were getting very tiresome. Leonard Rosenman - usually not the best choice for movie scoring - actually did an okay job with the theme and with the "Chekov's Run" cue.

Horner does a lot of remixes with his soundtracks. You can pick him out everytime. He is a better action composer imo and i think this new soundtrack was great. Would have been good to have got him back for the undiscovered country but he became full of himself after the trek films and said they were below him at that point. Good thing he remembered who gave him his big start.
