Nominated for Best Cinematography?
I always found it strange that this movie was nominated for best cinematography, It's not an ugly movie by any means but is there any information on what exactly the Academy saw in it?

shareYou make a good point. It looks great, but not Oscars-Calibre great.
Then again, Blue Velvet didn't even get nominated for the award and it was (IMO) the most gorgeous movie of '86. Must have been a weird year.

I guess even weirder is that Leonard Rosenman was nominated for his score. Personal I think the score is the worst of the Trek series, it's just way to jokey. I realize the movie is comedic in nature but the score didn't have to go overboard
shareI liked the music, but it swiped a lot from his earlier Lord of the Rings score.

Good point and I never really understood the nomination either. Sometimes it is not so much camera movement, but the lighting of the interior sets. The film was popular and sometimes this means Academy rewards. THE MISSION won cinematography and that is understandable for this year; but yes, Frederick Elmes, was more than deserving of a nod for BV. They also nominated Dennis Hopper for a gentle performance in HOOSIERS, instead of his frightening turn as the monstrous Frank.

That's because you're not watching it the correct way. After a couple of hits of LDS, this movie has the most wonderful cinematography of any movie in the history of movies.
shareFollowing movies all these years I have noticed the Oscars gives nods to popcorn movies that make a lot of money every once in while.
